Oblivion

Just back from a screening that I bagged free tickets for.

I'd give it a solid 7/10

Tom Cruise managed to stay on the right side of annoying me in his performance. Always a good thing as IMHO he can slip too easily into cheesy caricature with roles. Dissapointed that Morgan Freeman phoned in his performance. One or two lines delivered in the way only he can but get the feeling he did it for the pay cheque.
Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough are both gorgeous but the Brit wins the acting range contest hands down.Overall I'd give it a 7/10.If you like 1970s sci fi and associated genres of that period, you should enjoy it as I did.

Bluray 09-04-2013 22:08

I'm looking forward to it.

It seems to have come out of nowhere though. Not majorly hyped until more or less its release month.

RAZORBACK 09-04-2013 22:45

Went to preview screening earlier this evening and thought that it was a pretty satisfying mainstream sci-fi flick.

It wasn't a classic of the genre by any means & most of the twists etc weren't particularly original but overall this did what I expected it to so it gets a solid 7/10 from me...

First review i've seen for the film is up on DS (3/5). Even Empire haven't got their review up and it's released tomorrow! Nor have i seen reviews anywhere else.

Has anyone listened to the full soundtrack by M83 by any chance? It is AMAZING! I love it!

Deserana 12 10-04-2013 02:12

Damn only satisfying? Saw trailers and thought this looked a cut above some of the more recent big budget sci-fi films.

Hitchhiker553 10-04-2013 08:55

I'm going to keep an eye on the reviews coming out over the next few days and if I feel it's worth a look, I'll go next Tuesday.

Philip Wales 10-04-2013 10:28

I get the feeling with this film, that the trailers show all the best bits of the film, hope to be proven wrong.

MrSuper 10-04-2013 14:21

Review from Empire is up - 3/5.

I saw this today:)

A very good watch if a bit of a homage to just about every sci-film ever made from 2001 to Independence day with a liberal dosage of Planet of the Apes and a bit of Matrix thrown in.

A little corny in places but the visuals are stunning so I would recommend anyone to see it on a big screen or IMAX:)

Not bad

Sums up my feelings pretty well. Solid performances all round with just enough story to keep you interested. A bit of Hollywood cheese towards the end but overall worth a watch. My seat was vibrating with the sound in my IMAX showing.:)

Are we an effective thread....

Loved the Trailers for this.....the Film didn't disappoint... 8/10.

Bubbleship is stunning.
And I love the Swimming Pool......Olga too.;)

But there should have been more Morgan Freeman.

JaiJai 12-04-2013 09:01

So many mixed reviews....might just have to go see this.

Jackapple 12-04-2013 21:17

Saw an incredibly vacuous clip on the Graham Norton show last week, it looked utterly dreadful, completely soul-less and cheesy to boot!
pretty much made up my mind there and then I want be paying any money to watch it.

PinSarla 12-04-2013 23:04

It's not actually that cheesy, except for one or two lines. I would give it a 6/10, but the part of me that loves sci-fi/SF wants to give it less.

Scooterwolf 12-04-2013 23:48

Just got back, found it quite enjoyable to be honest, visually stunning and entertaining. Not a superb movie, but not a bad one either. 7/10

sinbad8982 12-04-2013 23:58

Just saw it, enjoyable enough and brilliant visuals but the premise just made little logical sense to me other than to pay homage to pretty much every decent sci fi movie of the last 40 years.

Nevertheless 7/10 but I'd recommend waiting for the blu-ray

Motthus 13-04-2013 20:25

I saw Oblivion this morning.Very average and way too long.Pity as it was decent attempt to do some different sci-fi but its just an average film!

3 out of 5

PJ68 13-04-2013 21:05

i thought this was great. VERY derivative (err MOON!) but i still thought it was done with great style. all three leads were great (i think tom cruise never really lets you down - never outstanding but never terrible). nest thing IMHO was the soundtrack - stunning.

natstally 14-04-2013 19:13

Enjoyed it more than i expected, i didn't really care for the trailers. Surprised Morgan freeman wasn't in it so much but to be honest it was the potential plot of his bits of the trailer that put me off.

Motthus 14-04-2013 19:53

I do think the trailers do spoil the film a bit as I may have enjoyed it more going in totally unknown!

NatalieP 14-04-2013 20:39

Having seen this last week and laughed most of the way through, I would have to say this movie was terrible - cheesy awful dialogue and wooden acting all round (Do you remember?? I remember...)

It reminded me of two things:

1) the Orange adverts, I kept expecting it to turn into one of those hilarious parody adverts

2) Joey from Friends 'smell the fart acting', seriously my friend and I have been taking the mick out of the facial expressions all week!

And I still have no clue what the actual point of the movie was! Shame as I quite like Tom Cruise.

loveloveX 15-04-2013 00:54

Going to watch the film this week but I just have to ask one question, does the film create a bit of a mood on its scenes on earth that creates effect of it being a memory like it says on the trailer earth is memory worth fighting for?

Yes - I had much the same thought. The first hour is very much a scene setter - and then it takes a very different turn in a different direction.

The one character I seemed to care most about in the end was Andrea Riseborough's character even though maybe I wasn't supposed to! Possibly because she acted everyone else off the screen.

Marly Z 15-04-2013 09:13

Saw this yesterday with my dad and brother. I quite enjoyed it but they both thought it was rubbish.

As everyone else has said the film is visually stunning. It's definitely entertaining and not actually as predictable as you'd expect - there were a couple plot twists that I would not have been able to guess in a million years. That said, the plot was actually rather bizarre (in a wtf did I just watch kind of way). I'd still recommend it though.
