Song(s) which sum up your taste in music.

I think this is quite an interesting question. For me, right now, it would have to be:

Girls Aloud - Every Now and Then & Call The Shots
AlunaGeorge - Your Drums, Your Love
Katy B - Broken Record & Crying For No Reason
Madonna - Frozen

At this moment in time, Life on Mars? by Bowie and Song For Guy by Elton John sum up what I'm currently listening to.

The Zookeepers Boy - Mew
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um3aQ8UB9HM

It captures the beautifully crafted uplifting indie rock I like perfectly (also see : Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks, The Shins - Saint Simon)

Catch a Collapsing Star - The Mendoza Line
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmOJ-VnvCi8

This capturing the fun upbeat folk rock/pop I enjoy (also see : The Tallest Man on Earth - The Gardner, Fleet Foxes - Your Protector)

Pearl Jam - Black
Because it's my favourite song - it's delicate and moving and if you get the chance to see them perform it live, it's stunning.

Difficult question for some, though I expect to see some "narrow perspectives revealed."

From this,

1940s,
Artie Shaw with Helen Forrest
"All The Things You Are."

1960s
John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman.
"My One and Only Love."

1990s
Kenny Garrett's solo with Miles Davis,
"Human Nature."

To something more contemporary,

2012
Halie Loren.
"Waiting in Vain."

I don't think I could pick a few songs to sum up my music tastes, they tend to be all over the place. From Taylor Swift to Iron Maiden to Gemma Hayes to Paul Brady to John Coltrane to John Lee Hooker and on and on like that.

RetroMusicFan 09-01-2014 11:45

Always On My Mind - PSB
World In My Eyes - Depeche Mode
Vogue - Madonna
Poker Face - Lady Gaga
Baggy Trousers - Madness
Valerie - Ronson/Winehouse

That's only part of it though.

Mew - Introducing Palace Players

Starts off disjointed and off tempo until 1:09 when it finds its feet, but even then, the song has an unusual time signature and it sounds like the whole thing is going to fall apart at any minute.

Some, like Doghouse, sum up their taste in eras.

I'm going to sum mine up in genres.

Here are the best ( in my opinion ) of my favourite genres.

Blues(old); Smokestack Lightnin'- Muddy Waters
Blues ( modern ); Hurt Like Mine - Black Keys
60s Rhythm & Blues; I Can Tell - Bo Diddley
Dance- Soul ; Out On The Floor - Dobie Grey
Dance - Disco; Native New Yorker - Odyssey
Soul Ballads ; Walk Away From Love - David Ruffin
Ska; Guns Of Navarone - Skatalites
Reggae; Monkey Spanner - Dave & Ansel Collins

Solange - Lovers In The Parking Lot
Demi Lovato - Heart Attack
Liz - Stop Me Cold
Naya Rivera - If I Die Young
Jessica Mauboy - Kick Up Your Heels

Smithy1204 10-01-2014 10:26

My all-time favourite songs are:

Westlife - When You're Looking Like That, World of Our Own, Queen Of My Heart
Oasis - Songbird
Mud - Tiger Feet
The Beatles - Twist & Shout, Please Please Me (closely followed by There's A Place)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Not sure what that says about my music tastes, I tend to just get automatically judged because of my love of Westlife. :P I love a lot of music though, I like the variety.

I'm the same but at the moment my playlist of albums is:

James Arthur - James Arthur
One Direction - Midnight Memories
P!nk - latest one with Try on it (can't think of the album title)
Little Mix - Salute
Jessie J - Alive
Katy Perry - Prism

I did have Billy Joel on there too but took him off just after Christmas.

This time last year it was Train, Ed Sheeran, Matchbox 20 and Taylor Swift.

I also love putting my ipod onto all songs and shuffle keeps the mix interesting :)

The Beatles - Across The Universe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN9n1bAahg4

Strong use of descriptive words observing the world around, dream-like, atmospheric, spiritual, soulful, self-indulgent (lol), but also with a strong sense of defiance.

It's almost above being just a song or music and more like the inner thoughts of a person's mind.

It's encouraging that it's also the first song that aliens will probably hear from our planet, as it was beamed into space to celebrate it's 40th anniversary and also NASA's 50th.

I absolutely love this song especially the 12" version with the long music intro. It's such a 70's New York disco song that seems to define the era.

lovelife7292 10-01-2014 22:09

Foxes - Youth
Clear Bandit - Rather Be
Chvrches - The Mother We Share

They are my 3 choices

mysty211 11-01-2014 03:58

Kind of difficult to sum up my interest anything from this sorta stuff
Blue - All Rise/One Love / You Make Me Wanna
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time / Toxic
John Mayer - Gravity
Olly Murs - Please Don't Let Me Go
Leona Lewis - Naked
Kelly Clarkson - Since You've Been Gone
The Killers - Mr Brightside

I'm not sure what this says about my music taste generally a mixture of everything.

mgvsmith 11-01-2014 12:38

Steve Earle - 'Copperhead Road'
The Verve - 'Bittersweet Symphony'
Angels and Airwaves - 'The Adventure' , 'True Love'
U2 - 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' , 'Bad'
The Crystals - 'Then he Kissed Me' , 'Da Do Ron Ron'
Ike and Tina Turner - 'River Deep, Mountain High', 'Nutbush City Limits'
30 Seconds to Mars - 'Kings and Queens'
Sugababes - 'Round, Round', 'Change'
Stone Roses - 'Waterfall'
Ultravox - 'When You Walk Through Me'
The Temptations - 'Law of the Land'
Van Morrison - 'Dweller on the Threshold'
