I think both the players and the audience take Noel's seemingly rude remarks in the humour they are intended. A lot of the players give as good as they get anyway.

Because it's supposed to be an award for achievements in the last 12 months not a lifetime achievement award (plus I'm an athletics fan from Leeds so might be a bit biased).
