No. Satellite TV may have 398 more stations than VM but a Sky subscription is not needed for the majority of the. Plus, of the ones you get in a Sky sub, I don't think there's too many that VM do not...

I think it's a fantastic way to bring more money (over and above the TVL) into the BBC to give them more money to put into programming. Better that than simply making programmes that are shown once...
