I'm tempted to ask what these scam calls about...

I'm tempted to ask what these scam calls about computer problems have to do with Talk Talk? Unless you really do believe that Talk Talk are somehow involved in this well known scam?

What if anything is plugged into the Return socket? If there is nothing, or any cable plugged in there is faulty, the other sockets will get nothing.

You can test it by using a lead you know works...

The only thing to avoid is bending the cable too tightly. If the cable deforms when you bend it then it's too tight. That may have an effect on the performance. But provided you are gentle with it...
