Why not? In 1990 it was always "nineteen-ninety", "one thousand nine hundred and ninety" would have been daft, so what is wrong with "twenty-eleven"?

Personally I am happy to use either for this...

I don't recall ever hearing "ginger" when I was young in the 50s, "redhead" was the normal word. I have only noticed "ginger" in use in the ten years or so. Maybe it is a regional variation.
