In the last series I felt that Fletcher was not exactly a pleasant character, but the actor must be doing a great job if in this series I genuinely empathize with his character.

I'm not surprised at all. I've always found it hugely entertaining, and it was a very different setup from the other Bond films which borrowed heavily from the Blaxploitation film scene of the time.
