In Australia the contactless limit is 100 AUD, which is about 55 and they don't really have any issue with it. The limit is only slightly less in New Zealand.

If your going to be out of a main city I'd manually select AT&T. A lot of T-Mobile's masts outside of major markets use a frequency that UK phones don't support., so you only get edge on them....
