So it all hinges on the definition of duty-free! I'd assumed it was kind of thing you used to buy in the duty-free shops (fags, booze, perfume) not the ordinary airport retailers but maybe I'm wrong....

They can be very inflexible - which is fair enough because their policy is clear. I had to find a way of fitting the contents of a carrier bag into my cabin baggage. I wouldn't risk it.
