There is an article in one of today's Sunday magazine about a 29 year old student who is going into the world of work for the first time!
Basically she has done two degrees, a Masters and a PHD and apparently thats an excuse for never having worked
Now frankly I find it appalling that someone of almost 30 has never had a job before and being at Uni is not an excuse either as all the people on my course either have Saturday jobs or holiday jobs. I have worked full time previousley, and did so from the age of 16-23 when I decided to go back to education.
If I was a potential employer I would not want to hire someone of that age who had not had so much as a Saturday job before. How will she understand the world of work?

i don't find anything strange about that.
I have either done voluntary work, travelled most of the world or studied.
Life skills are just as admirable as working skills and I am sure they can be just as aptly applied.
Not many people have had the opportunities I have had or the rich experience voluntary work and travel brings.
Was at college, university and then unemployed for 20 months.
I then had to wait another 3 months to officially start my new job.
Exactly. I know a few people who have taken a Phd, and all of them just about completed it.
How do you make ends meet? Ooo and where have you been?
what next ........ pope practicing catholasism and bears do s*it in woods.
I was about to say that. Although I guess it is a little unusual to not even have a paper round
It's not like she chose to breed for a living a la Karen Matthews.
My parents do give me an allowance, its not a massive amount and I don't have an expensive lifestyle.
But still not having got any form of a job at 30 is pretty shocking I would of thought she'd have got a summer placement at a company relating to her degree, can you remember what degrees she did.
Oh and PhD can sometimes be pretty intensive.
People take different routes. This person has obviously taken the academic one and likes to study. I'm sure she isn't alone.
PhDs are pretty tough. I have a friend who is doing one (lucky arse is getting paid to go to uni - Tax free!). He'll be earning shit loads when he finishes because the PhD is funded by the company he is going to work for; he's doing a working PhD.
Yeah but thats different. They will spend time working at a hospital alongside qualified doctors learning their trade, the same with teachers and vet's.
I honestly believe its sheer laziness. What the hell has she been doing during the long summer months?
I have a private income.
France
Germany
Switzerland
Austria
Belgium
Denmark
Australia
America
Malaysia
Bulgaria
Spain
Portugal
Andorra
Slovenia which was then Yugoslavia.
Just the few I remember without a headache.
There may be loads of reasons why she didn't have a job. Maybe she had enough money not to need to, for whatever reason, or maybe she was caring for an elderly/sick relative, or maybe she was doing voluntary work, or maybe she was studying full time - PhDs are bloody hard work.
He has been 'a student' for as long as I can remember, and lives in the house which belonged originally to my great grandparents, all fully refurbished by his mum and dad (my aunt and uncle).
He pays no bills, as my aunt pays for them. He buys no food, as my aunt does the Tesco run and drops off their food. He has no money of his own to speak of. His parents bought him a (second-hand admittedly) Range Rover, which they tax, insure and even fuel for him.
When he wants to buy clothes, he rings my aunt who meets him in town, and pays at the till for his needs. He has even had to ring his mother to go and buy and buy nappies for the baby, which she duly did.
It has always been like this, and always will be, he has openly declared his intention not to do a days work. He is an only child, and when people use the phrase 'spoiled', in this case it is the literal truth, as his parents have never taught him the value of anything, never taught him how to stand on his own two feet, or be a man and provide for his daughter.
I feel really sorry for him, for as a kept man he has never known what it is like to truly own anything, as nothing he has is his, paid for by his own hand.
is this person obliged to work during summer holidays? what makes you think s/he is lazy? do you know what s/he has been doing? do you have any evidence whatsoever for calling someone lazy?
Enviable
I'm going to be 60+ before I can start my travels... ah well.
Good god!!!
What on earth's going to happen if, well I suppose when something happen's to his parents? He won't know how to do a thing for himself! Its shocking and his parents are to blame for treating him like that. What if they had financial difficulties? What would he do for money then?
