1. BBC Radio Wales is hoping to pull in extra listeners in south east Wales with the switching on of a new FM transmitter. Thousands of people in Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan and the Gwent Valleys can now get the station on 103.9 FM instead of only on medium wave. The transmitter at Wenvoe, which also broadcasts Welsh language station Radio Cymru and the BBC’s network stations, went live with Radio Wales at 10.39am Tuesday. More

2. The regulator received five responses to a public consultation on the change, which began in September after Ofcom decided that the change would result in a substantial change to the character of the service. One response – from a local MP – did not give an opinion on the change but suggested that Ofcom should consider the effect it would have on other Aberdeenshire stations NECR in Kintore and Waves Radio in Peterhead. The only other non-confidential response was in favour of the format change, suggesting at the same time that the regulator should ‘stick to more serious matters’ and allow audiences to decide whether format changes are acceptable like in America where stations can flip formats over a weekend. More

3. Celador Radio and Midwest Radio have applied for the re-advertised local radio licence for Bridgwater and West Somerset. It follows a breach of the licence by Total Star Somerset for transmitting at several times the permitted power level, with the licence term cut to finish earlier than scheduled next summer. The licence was then purchased from More FM Ltd by Celador, who have been running their Breeze format on the frequencies since August. More

4. Ofcom has announced the award of four new community radio licences in the South West of England. Stations in Blandford Forum and Sherborne in Dorset and Bradley Stoke and Winchcombe in Gloucestershire have been given five year licences by the regulator. More

5. Canis Media has teamed up with WRN Broadcast to launch the UK’s first shopping radio station, Shop Radio. Shop Radio will be broadcast on the Sky platform Sky EPG radio channel 0184. More

6. Shropshire local radio station The Severn and Kidderminster’s The Wyre are to be closed by owner MNA Broadcasting at the end of next month. There are expected to be a small number of redundancies as a result and Ofcom has been told of the group’s intention to return the licences. More

7. BBC director general Mark Thompson has hinted at a possible U-turn over planned cuts to its local radio stations, telling MPs "we don't want to preside over the decline of local radio". Cuts to the BBC's 40 local stations in England, which will account for 280 jobs or about 20% of their workforce, have prompted a bigger public response than any other part of the corporation's "Delivering Quality First" £700m cost-saving plan. BBC insiders said they no longer expected the cuts to be implemented as outlined in DQF, although they said it was too early to say how or to what extent they would be changed. The corporation is no stranger to reversing planned cuts to its radio services, having ditched plans to axe digital services BBC Radio 6 Music and the Asian Network. More

8. The UK Government’s switchover date for digital radio may need some fine-tuning, as a new survey of car manufacturers reveals at least half are steering clear of the new technology. As part of its Digital Britain vision, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport named 2015 as the deadline for turning off its ageing analogue radio network, in favour of digital sets. The move would mean the vast majority of today’s in-car tuners would cease to work overnight. But slow take up, and new findings from Auto Express suggest the switchover could now be delayed until 2017. More

9. Re-advertising a second national commercial multiplex could be one option to help the growth of DAB, it has been suggested. Speaking to Radio Today, Digital Radio UK CEO Ford Ennals said people are beginning to talk about Digital 2, and it “might come back on the table”. Digital One, the only national commercial multiplex, can accommodate new stations but only if other services reduce their bandwidth. Three years ago Channel 4 withdrew from launching a second multiplex after winning a licence in July 2007. Extra space on an additional multiplex would enable existing operators provide a better quality sound and allow additional national stations to launch. More

Newsie Bits

1. Spectrum management is expected to be a key plank of Ofcom’s plans for 2012. Publishing its Draft Work Programme for 2012/13, the regulator said the completion of digital switchover presented the opportunity to release significant amounts of spectrum below 1GHz. Ofcom confirmed plans to auction off significant amounts of spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. Services that currently use the frequency range – including digital terrestrial television – are being cleared to other bands and a consultation on auction regulations via secondary legislation is planned. More

2. UK regulator Ofcom has identified 20 specific sites for a local TV multiplex that it will advertise if proposed legislation is passed by parliament. The sites, which will now go to consultation, have been selected from ones where local TV is technically possible and Ofcom considers there is a potential local service operator. They have also been selected to achieve a range of locations across the UK, as well as a range of scale of operations, with Ofcom in addition taking into account evidence of strong local demand. The 20 sites are Belfast, Birmingham, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Grimsby, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth, Preston, Southampton and Swansea. More

3. The BBC today announced a new deal to launch the BBC’s award-winning 24-hour international news channel, BBC World News, in major markets across the US through Comcast’s Xfinity TV. By the end of 2011, the channel will be available in Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Portland, as well as across Northern California, Michigan and Western New England. BBC World News will launch in additional Comcast markets next year. BBC World News has the largest audience of any BBC channel in the world, broadcasting in over 200 countries and territories worldwide with access to more than 70 international newsgathering bureaus globally. BBC World News is expected to be in nearly 15 million US homes by the end of 2012. More

4. DIGITAL TV SUMMIT – 2011. The BBC plans to deliver some of its coverage of next year’s Olympic Games in 3D, according to Roger Mosey, director of London, 2012, BBC. However, he did not provide any further details, other than it would be on an experimental basis, like Wimbledon. More

5. UK consumers watch more TV online than other major countries, according to Ofcom's sixth International Communications Market Report. They also use the internet for shopping more, use their mobiles more to go online and play more games on their phones, according to the report which looked at take-up, availability and use of broadband, landlines, mobiles, TV and radio in 17 countries. The report revealed that over a quarter (27%) of UK internet users watch TV online every week, an increase of 3 percentage points from 2010, and higher than any of the other countries surveyed. According to Ofcom, the popularity of a wide variety of free-to-view catch-up TV services such as BBC iPlayer has helped to drive online TV viewing in the UK. More

6. Ninety one satellite operators, manufacturers and financiers have voiced their concerns over a proposed piece of international legislation called the Unidroit Space Assets Protocol, sponsored by the Unidroit organisation, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law, based in Rome. This Protocol aims to develop a new legal framework for financing satellite and space programmes despite the fact that no problems have been identified with the existing framework for financing satellites, which has worked well to date, according to the satellite industry, including organisations such as CASBAA, the European Satellite Operators Association (ESOA), the Satellite Industry Association of (SIA) of the United States and the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA). More

7. Eutelsat is to unify the names of its satellites around the established Eutelsat brand from 1st March next year. From that date, the group’s satellites will take the Eutelsat name associated with the relevant figure for their orbital position and a letter indicating their order of arrival at that position. Current in-orbit satellites will for instance be renamed as follows: W6 at 21.5 degrees East will become Eutelsat 21A More

    8. International broadcasters - Voice of America (VOA), British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Deutsche Welle (DW), Audiovisuel Extérieur de la France (AEF) and Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) – have condemned the deliberate interference of satellite broadcasting signals to silence independent media and prevent free access to information. Meeting in London, the Directors General of these broadcasting organisations issued a statement, noting, “We have seen an escalation this year in the number of pressure tactics that have been used on the media being accessed by audiences in Iran and other countries. More.

    9. BBC Worldwide has announced the arrival of the company’s on-demand Global BBC iPlayer trial service on Apple iPhone and Apple iPod Touch which will become available on Thursday 8 December. Previously available on Apple iPad, the pilot subscription service will now reach millions of new viewers in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. More.

    10. As businesses continue to feel the pinch from tough economic conditions, the next generation of business leaders says in a new study that sustainability must be a priority for all businesses and sets out its plans for a more sustainable future. ‘The Sustainable Generation: The Sky Future Leaders Study’ examines for the first time the attitudes and ambitions towards sustainability of 750 corporate graduate trainees, high potential middle-managers and MBA students. It uncovers a group who readily describe themselves as the first ‘sustainable generation’ and who have a clear vision for their own careers. But it also sends a warning that UK businesses aren’t matching their warm words with concrete actions More

    11. ITV chief exec Adam Crozier plans to boost the number of third-party commissions handled by the broadcaster’s production arm ITV Studios (ITVS), claiming it should be seen as “an independent.” Until a few years ago about 65% of ITVS commissions came from its parent broadcaster’s channels. However, that figure fell to about 45% as the relationship between the two became strained More.

    12. DIGITAL TV SUMMIT – 2011. Sky plans to invest £600 million (€700.2 million) a year on UK commissioned content by 2014, compared to the £380 million it spent last year. Its total investment in content this year, according to commercial director Rob Webster, will amount to £2 billion, a big chunk of which will be for sport. Commenting on the pay-TV market in general, he said that there are still 10.4 million homes in the UK and Ireland not receiving services and they represent a “big opportunity” for the company. More

    13. Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you, If you have a high-gain aerial or use signal amplifiers, it is quite common to find that the high-power digital signals provided after switchover will overload your Freeview equipment - and can appear to be "weak signals". 1. Adjustable depth and full HD quality could be available to 3D TV viewers from 2012 in a new set of broadcasting formats. The DVB Group, which sets the standards for digital TV in Europe and many other countries, is working on proposals to improve the current 3D TV experience. Top of the list for the Phase Two 3DTV standard are Depth Range Control and how to upgrade to Full HD detail from today's half-HD 3D. David Wood, chairman of the DVB commercial module, said he hopes to make the new standard available to broadcasters in the middle of 2012. Depth Range Control would allow viewers to adjust the intensity of the 3D effect, to make it comfortable for their eyesight and the room they're in. More

    2. While the war over active versus passive 3D TVs rages on, it could be all but obliterated by the development of an auto-stereoscopic television which does away with the glasses altogether. Some manufacturers, like Toshiba, have committed to rushing out a glasses-free 3D TV as early as 2012, but Panasonic has now said that it'll be at least five years before it has an auto-stereoscopic 3D set on the market. Speaking at Intellect's Consumer Electronics 2011 show, Panasonic's marketing manager Andrew Denham explained why: "Its not there yet. The physics of it – you can't get there without hurting the 2D experience at the moment." More

    3. While the industry casts its eyes toward the day glasses-free auto-stereo displays go mainstream, holographic 3D systems may not be far behind. Consumer electronics manufacturers have been investigating the ground-breaking work being performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Samsung is a sponsor of the MIT Media Lab where a team is researching holographic capture and display technologies. More

According to a thread in the Freesat forum, 'NME TV' is closing down on Thursday 5th January 2012.

So looks like the 'NME TV' EPG slot will become 'Chart Show TV +1' from that date.

Seems not but NME TV is closing and Chart Show TV +1 looks like a temporary placeholder.

3831 (on 12.188 H) now has MTV UK EPG data (not to be confused with MTVN HD).

However, the channel is not showing MTV - but is showing one episode on a loop around 45 minutes of "I Used To Be Fat", which is an MTV programme. There is no sound at the moment.

Surely MTV are not going to put the main channel in HD as well as MTVN HD or instead of? Well, you never know! This is the first I knew of any other MTV channel appearing in HD!

Well MTVNHD was supposed to be renamed to 'MTV LIVE HD" was it not?

I would think MTV HD will launch as a separate channel though. MTVNHD is required for HD concerts or awards.

Electric Sofa have removed all mentions of their 2011 launch from their site.

    www.electric-sofa.com

    Not here, still 192k.

Wow really? Ok then, doesn't sound it. It sounds shabby compared to the MTV channels.

MTVN HD has become MTV Live HD (or VH1 HD) in all markets except the UK. This service doesn't get any attention in the UK, the EPG listings have been one hour out since October and still aren't fixed.
