1. About half of the planned £15m cut to the budgets of 40 BBC local radio stations across England is to be reversed following an outcry from the public, politicians and religious leaders. The BBC Trust confirmed on Wednesday that it has asked management, led by director general Mark Thompson, to row back on just over half of £18m a year of proposed savings affecting local radio, regional current affairs such as BBC1's Inside Out programme, and current affairs on Radio 5 Live. In total, BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said the changes to the "Delivering Quality First" cost-cutting proposals should "cost the BBC no more than £10m" a year. More

2. Glasgow community radio station Celtic Music Radio is available on DAB across much of southern, eastern and central England for the next few weeks – as well as in Ayrshire and South East Wales. The station is using Now Digital’s ‘Pop Up’ channel on 19 local multiplexes to bring the Celtic Connections music festival to millions of potential listeners from later this week. Celtic Music Radio started as an RSL station in 2006, covering the world-famous event. It was awarded a full-time community radio licence in 2007 and has just had its licence extended by a further five years to January 2018. It broadcasts on 1530AM in Glasgow. More

3. Orion Media is to rebrand Birmingham station BRMB as Free Radio from April this year, along with Mercia, Beacon and Wyvern. The group says peak time output will remain local on the stations with no redundancies as a result. It means the four heritage brands, which have each existed at least 30 years, will be lost from the UK airwaves. BRMB launched in 1974, Beacon in 1976, Mercia in 1980 and Wyvern in 1982 and have kept the same names since. More

4. UTV’s national station talkSPORT has been awarded the rights to broadcast full commentary on all 31 matches at this summer’s Euro 2012 football tournament. BBC Radio 5 live will also air full match coverage of every game of the competition, which kicks off in Warsaw on 8th June and ends with the final on 1st July in Kiev. Moz Dee, talkSPORT Programme Director, said: “Major international sport tournaments are a huge draw for our listeners, as we’ve found with the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and the Rugby World Cup this year. With a team that includes Stan Collymore, Andy Gray and Richard Keys I believe we have some of the best sports broadcasters in the business and we’re the perfect place for listeners to follow all of the action next summer. I’m delighted to be bringing every game of EURO 2012 live to fans.” More

5. The UK Government’s switchover date for digital radio may need some fine-tuning, as a new survey of car manufacturers reveals at least half are steering clear of the new technology. As part of its Digital Britain vision, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport named 2015 as the deadline for turning off its ageing analogue radio network, in favour of digital sets. The move would mean the vast majority of today’s in-car tuners would cease to work overnight. But slow take up, and new findings from Auto Express suggest the switchover could now be delayed until 2017. More

1. Five of the largest international broadcasters, including the BBC, have called on delegates to the World Radiocommunication Conference in Geneva to take action over a practice known as "satellite uplink jamming." This is the intentional interference by states to block transmissions in order to prevent messages getting out. The European Broadcasting Union contends that such jamming contravenes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights More

2. Fast-growing UKTV channel Watch, now regarded as the company’s flagship channel, has unveiled its new on-air identity. Out goes the blue eye to be replaced by a red and black circle that could be taken as a red eye or clock face. It will grace screens from 7th February. More

3. Ofcom has reopened the debate into the regulation of on demand video services with a new study commissioned from Ipsos MORI. Currently Ofcom does not even directly regulate VOD content, leaving it in the hands of industry-appointed regulator ATVOD. But members of the public interviewed for the study assumed that the regulation for broadcast and on demand television, including that received through connected TVs, were equal, expectations were only lowered for content received over the open internet. Expectations were partly determined by the screen used, such as a large shared screen in living room versus personal PC or device, but also by the comparative ease of access to audio-visual content through a one-touch button or seamless link to VOD. More

4. Kids’ TV looks set to be the next front in the battle between the BBC and Sky, with the corporation urging the government to help its children’s channels land better slots on the satellite platform’s EPG. The corporation is understood to be keen to tackle what it sees as a loophole in the wording around prominence for PSB channels under the Ofcom code. Unlike other terrestrials, the BBC’s full range of channels is considered PSB. Although these channels are entitled to an “appropriate” EPG listing, neither the regulator nor government stipulates what that means. It is left up to platforms such as Sky to decide, and the satellite giant has CBBC and CBeebie sat positions 13 and 14, or page three, of its children’s sub-category.More

5. OXFORD: Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards has outlined proposals for regulation in the digital future - but rejected the idea of a “single super regulator”. In a speech at the Oxford Media Convention, Richards said that the “regulatory status quo” may not give viewers the protection they expect as technology evolves and different forms of media cross boundaries. More

6. Microsoft Corp has put its talks with media companies about an online subscription service for TV shows and movies on hold, according to a report from Reuters . After intense talks with potential programming partners for over a year, Microsoft pulled back after deciding that the licensing costs were too high for the business model. “They built Microsoft TV, they demoed it for us, they asked for rate cards but then said ‘ooh ah, that’s expensive,’” said one senior media executive who had been involved in the talks. More

7. An independent report commissioned by culture minister Ed Vaizey has said Sky should make a greater contribution towards British cinema. A Future for British Film – it begins with the audience, the findings of the independent review panel chaired by Lord Chris Smith, welcomed the £2 billion (€2.4 billion) invested in content by the satcaster but said it had benefitted from the UK’s liberal approach to broadcasting legislation. “It is by far the biggest pay-TV operator in the UK but has no obligations to contribute to the wider audiovisual culture. By way of contrast, the pay-TV operators in France, Canal+ and its siblings, invested over £290 million in French films in 2010 as a result of legislative obligations,” said the review. More

8. Ireland’s Minister for Communications has confirmed that he is considering a new household broadcasting charge to replace the television licence fee. Pat Rabbitte told the Dáil that this would not be an additional charge, and would not affect anyone who was already paying their television licence. More

    9. After twelve years supporting and strengthening the media in the developing world, the BBC World Service Trust has entered a significant new stage. As of 16 December 2011, it has changed its name to BBC Media Action. Its core purpose and mission remain the same, embodied in the strapline ‘transforming lives through media around the world’. More

    10. Sky has entered into a strategic partnership with zeebox, the innovative ‘second-screen' consumer service that brings together broadcast TV and the Internet. Launching in the first half of 2012, Sky and zeebox will offer a ground breaking companion app experience for Sky customers which offers unique ‘augmented’ TV viewing features, such as connecting with friends around TV shows, finding more information about what's on TV, and buying products relating to their favourite programmes. Sky will become the only TV platform in the UK to integrate zeebox’s technology into its own applications – which include Sky+ and the multi award-winning Sky Go - to give its customers an even richer companion experience to complement their main set viewing. More

    11. Sony Pictures Television has boosted its UK stable of channels to six after striking a multi-million pound deal to buy Dolphin Broadcasting, owner of channels including Movies4Men. Sony Pictures Television (SPT), which announced the deal on Thursday, will also make its first move into TV ad sales in the UK, taking a majority stake in Dolphin's sales house. Dolphin which owns five male-themed TV channels made revenue of £9.3m in the year to the end of June 2011. Dolphin also represents TV ad sales for clients including True Movies, which is owned by CSC Media, Welsh public service broadcaster S4C and the teleshopping operations on Channel 4, ITV and Sky. 12. New proposals from Ofcom are expected to make 4G mobile coverage available to at least 98% of the UK population. The capacity in the 800MHz band, secured through the shift to digital TV, will be auctioned off towards the end of the year. At the same time frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band will also be made available. Between them the two blocks are equivalent to three-quarters of the mobile spectrum currently in use. Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards, said: “This is a crucial step in preparing for the most significant spectrum release in the UK for many years. The proposals published today will influence the provision of services to consumers for the next decade and beyond”. The revised plans follow last year’s consultation, held between March and May, over how 4G spectrum, including LTE and WiMAX, might affect future competition in mobile communications. More

    13. Virgin Media has announced it will double the speeds of over four million of its broadband customers and boost its top speed to 120Mb, in order to meet the growing demand for next generation broadband. Starting in February 2012, the upgrade programme will continue over 18 months and is expected to be complete by mid 2013. Subscribers to Virgin Media's current 10Mb, 20Mb, 30Mb and 50Mb services will see their speeds at least doubled, with 100Mb customers receiving speeds of 120Mb. 120Mb broadband will allow users to download an entire music album in 4.4 seconds and a high definition movie in around 5 minutes. 15. Spectrum management is expected to be a key plank of Ofcom’s plans for 2012. Publishing its Draft Work Programme for 2012/13, the regulator said the completion of digital switchover presented the opportunity to release significant amounts of spectrum below 1GHz. Ofcom confirmed plans to auction off significant amounts of spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands. Services that currently use the frequency range – including digital terrestrial television – are being cleared to other bands and a consultation on auction regulations via secondary legislation is planned. 2. Adjustable depth and full HD quality could be available to 3D TV viewers from 2012 in a new set of broadcasting formats. The DVB Group, which sets the standards for digital TV in Europe and many other countries, is working on proposals to improve the current 3D TV experience. Top of the list for the Phase Two 3DTV standard are Depth Range Control and how to upgrade to Full HD detail from today's half-HD 3D. David Wood, chairman of the DVB commercial module, said he hopes to make the new standard available to broadcasters in the middle of 2012. Depth Range Control would allow viewers to adjust the intensity of the 3D effect, to make it comfortable for their eyesight and the room they're in. More

    3. While the industry casts its eyes toward the day glasses-free auto-stereo displays go mainstream, holographic 3D systems may not be far behind. Consumer electronics manufacturers have been investigating the ground-breaking work being performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Samsung is a sponsor of the MIT Media Lab where a team is researching holographic capture and display technologies. More

Luxury Life has ceased transmission. Wedding TV is now on this capacity 24 hours a day, but the now/next info is still running as if Luxury Life was still on air.

between 4-6am, Wedding TV appears to have a promo loop running.

Al Gore's Current TV has admitted defeat in its fight to remain on Sky, and contracted Canis Media to sell its valuable channel slot on the satellite platform.

Earlier in the month, the part Rupert Murdoch-owned Sky took the "commercial decision" to no longer offer the liberal current affairs channel to its more-than-10m UK subscribers.

The move came within months of Sky Italia also controversially dropping the network in Italy, leading to claims that Murdoch's News Corporation was victimising Current TV on political grounds.

Current's pay-TV contract with Sky was due to end in March, but the satellite firm has opted not to renew it after judging that the channel had not "made the impact with our customers that we'd hoped for".

Current TV, which is still available on Virgin Media channel 155 and online, could have opted to continue as a free-to-air channel on Sky, but its pay-TV licence with Sky made up the channel's "core funding".

The broadcaster, which is facing an uncertain future in the UK, has now opted to hire Canis Media to handle the sale of its prime entertainment channel slot on Sky's electronic programme guide (EPG).

"We have been conducting rapid and intense rescue discussions with a couple of strong partners, but we have to face up to the fact that we may not succeed," said Current TV UK managing director Jane Mote.

"We, therefore, drafted in the services of Canis to help us maximise the value of one of our key assets - our valuable EPG slot which is about to move from 183 to 181."

Canis has previously helped various high-profile broadcasters leaving the Sky platform, including the sale of nine channel slots owned by collapsed sports broadcaster Setanta UK in 2009, along with overseeing Sony's acquisition of the slot previously operated by Flim24 last year.

The company sent out a sales brochure yesterday for parties potentially interested in the Current TV EPG slot. Canis said that it expects a "tough bidding war" as the sale comes amidst another reshuffle of the Sky EPG.

"This is a rare opportunity to purchase a premium EPG position in the Entertainment Genre on the UK's digital satellite (Sky) platform," said Canis Media's managing director Fergus Lawson.

"The strong position and the Sky reshuffle will ensure the winning bidder has access to a large and potentially brand new audience in this part of the EPG."

It's very sad to see a channel leave in this way back to the Rapture days.

However the content is not really that good surprised it can't be a FTA channel to be honest as it was never pay quality.

Just to give you a heads up, Sky are cancelling 3 channels

    Diva TV
    Current TV
Sky Living (I think he means Sky Living Loves)

    dates to be announced

Sky cancelling 3 channels? Diva TV is run by NBC/Universal!, its up to them if they are closing it down or not

Hope something replaces it - I think NBC/Universal should have put more effort in to the channel in the first place when their other channels were re-braning.

As NBC/Universal have an epg number, will the give it up or use it for something else? 13th Street was rumored to be heading to the UK, maybe they will use the epg slot for getting MSNBC over to the UK?

Is Extreme Sports a possibility ?

Sky Italia are adding it. http://advanced-television.com/index.php/2012/01/26/sky-italia-to-add-13-hdtv-channels-in-february/

    Extreme sports to extend HD
Louise Cottrell, Chello Zone’s VP affiliate sales, added: “We’re looking forward to working with Sky to launch the Extreme Sports Channel brand in Italy as part of their Entertainment package, and expect the new high definition feed to roll out across the rest of EMEA in the coming months.”

I will miss Current TV, it is a shame that they cannot continue Free To Air/View and stay on Sky's EPG or that they cannot continue off of Sky's EPG like Radio Caroline

Has Sky Living Loves been given the heave-ho to allow Sky F1 ? I think Diva TV has been struggling for a while so NBC/Universal will want to replace it with another channel that will get decent viewing figures (13th Street please) . Current TV cannot survive as FTA without advertising revenue and its best chance is as an online only channel.

Diva TV to close down on Tuesday 14th February:

    Broadcast Now:
    NBCU to close DivaTV

NBC Universal is to close DivaTV, the UK home of The Oprah Winfrey Show and Queer Eye For A Straight Guy, as it shifts its focus onto The Style Network.

In the move, which only affects the UK market, NBC will rationalise its channel offering following its March acquisition by Comcast, which gave it control over lifestyle channels E! and Style in the UK.

DivaTV, which airs in Sky slot 269, will close on 14 February, with its most popular programmes shifting to Style.

NBC will now support five channels comprising Style, E!, Universal Channel, Syfy and Movies24.

A spokesperson for Universal Networks International said the move would result in a sharper focus: “DivaTV and Style are very similarly positioned in the UK market, and we will concentrate on engaging viewers with five channel brands in the UK.”

Primetime has two labels on 12.607 H both labelled Primetime and both activ. They point to the4 same stream so one must be a "dummy" SiD forpub EPGs
