1. The digital switch-over has quietly commenced at four BBC local radio stations in England, RadioToday.co.uk can reveal. BBC Radio Kent, BBC Radio Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Nottingham have all stopped broadcasting regular programmes on medium wave, instead directing listeners to FM or DAB. It’s part of a five week trial to make savings and to find out if listeners will miss or complain about the lack of AM services. The BBC told RadioToday.co.uk: “MW services mainly duplicate what is already available on FM and DAB, and most listeners will be able to hear their local stations on FM. The BBC is also committed to a full roll out of local radio stations across the DAB network. If local radio is not already available on DAB it will be in the future. Full Details

2. Southport’s Dune FM has stopped broadcasting after Ofcom had to physically remove the station’s transmitter. The company which owned the licence was subject to a winding-up order on July 9th, meaning licence became void. Ofcom rules state that a company which has been wound-up cannot own a broadcasting licence. The regulator had been in touch with the station recently to request they stopped broadcasting – a request which was apparently ignored by those in charge at Dune FM. More.

3. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has ordered an investigation into Global Radio's £70m deal to acquire GMG Radio, on the grounds of potential competition and plurality issues. The secretary of state has issued an intervention notice ordering media regulator Ofcom to conduct an investigation into potential media plurality issues raised by combining the largest and third largest radio groups in the UK. However, Global Radio's deal to buy GMG Radio has been completed and cannot be de-railed by any potential regulatory issues. Global – the parent company of brands including Capital, Heart and Classic FM – announced the deal to takeover GMG Radio's Smooth and Real Radio brands in late June. Global Radio has already applied for the deal to be put through a fast-track investigation process by the Competition Commission. More.

4. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More.

5. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. More

Newsie Bits

1. Praise TV has had its licence revoked.Ofcom quotes; In the course of the correspondence with Ofcom, statements made by Destiny Broadcasting Network Europe Limited about the operation of the Licensed Service failed to satisfy Ofcom that the Licensee had general control over which programmes and other services were comprised in the Licensed Service. Ofcom therefore concluded that Destiny Broadcasting Network Europe Limited had ceased to provide the Licensed Service in accordance with section 362(2) of the Act and that, accordingly, it was appropriate to revoke TLCS Licence 1482 under Condition 29(2)(a) of that Licence. In addition, and in the alternative, Ofcom was satisfied that in the course of correspondence with Ofcom, the Licensee, in purporting to comply with any of the Conditions of the Licence, provided information which was false in a material particular or withheld any material information with the intention of causing Ofcom to be misled. Accordingly it was appropriate to revoke TLCS Licence 1482 under Condition 29(2)(b) of that Licence. The Licence was revoked on 15th August 2012. Full Details

2. RT will launch an HD variant soon on Sky (but not until January 2013, due to Sky's launch queue length) This might be earlier on non 28.5 satellites also RT is launching a UK specific variant mid September initially modest UK derived and oriented content, but building quite quickly. (Sources)

3. THIRTY-five posts have been earmarked for redundancy at BBC Scotland, as part of a cutbacks announcement made last year. In October, it was announced that between 100 and 120 posts were at risk of redundancy between then and the financial year 2016-17, as a result of a review, titled ‘Delivering Quality First’, that followed negotiations the previous year between the Westminster government and the BBC that led to the licence fee being frozen for six years. For BBC Scotland that meant a 16 per cent budget cut, translated to a £16.1 million each year cut from an annual budget of £102 million. Thirty-nine posts have already gone and when the 35, now earmarked for redundancy by the end of March, are added, the running total will be 74. More.

4. Ofcom has approved an application by Everything Everywhere, owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to use its existing 1800 MHz spectrum to deliver 4G services. Following a consultation, Ofcom has concluded that varying Everything Everywhere's 1800 MHz licences now will deliver "significant benefits" to consumers and outweigh any competition concerns. More.

5. ITV has denied it is interested in airing any of BT's Premier League matches, but admitted that it is planning to pitch for the £100m-plus contract to produce the telecoms company's live football coverage. BT, which owns the BT Vision subscription video-on-demand service, will formally put out a three-year tender, valued at between £100m and £132m, for the contract to produce its football coverage and has opened early stage talks with ITV about a potential partnership. ITV intends to pitch for the business. Production subsidiary ITV Studios already makes the English-language commentary for Al-Jazeera's Sports, fronted by Gary Lineker, Ruud Gullit, Alan Shearer and Terry Venables, for expats throughout the Middle East. More.

6. DMOL, the industry backed organisation for the management of the UK DTT platform, has published the findings of its review into the Freeview numbering system. In changes slated to be introduced on 19th September, DMOL plans to create additional capacity for new services and make the guide easier to navigate. As part of the update new channel numbers will be reserved for public service local TV channels. These are 8 in England and Northern Ireland and 45 in Wales and Scotland, such a scheme as long been favoured by government as part of its plans to create a nationwide chain of local TV services. More. and Following a consultation earlier in the year, from lunchtime on Wednesday 19th September, you will have to retune to get the new numbers allocated to some Freeview channels; in particular those used for News, Adult, Children and high definition services. More.

7. A list of the local applicants for the local TV services have been published by Ofcom

Researchers in South Korea have developed new technology that could enable 3D television and cinema to be viewed without glasses. The team, from Seoul National University, created a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen itself and creates the illusion of depth in the viewer’s perception. Previous attempts at making glasses-free 3D TV have made use of a similar technology, but they required the screen to be viewed from a certain angle. More.

Still unable to set recordings or live pause on any of the Paralympic channels

As sky viewers we looked on at the failings when Humax Freesat boxes were unable to record or live pause the Olympic channels. Looks like its Sky's turn to mess up!

Checked the Humax Freesat box in the living room and that can live pause the channels.

Hope Sky/C4 sort it in time for the first events in the morning! Maybe the ability will be switched on when the channels officially launch which going by the EPG is 7am.

ITV1 to rebrand... back to ITV.

    http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/itv-to-drop-1-from-flagship-in-rebrand/5045824.article
ITV to drop ‘1’ from flagship in rebrand

ITV is poised to drop the numeral one from its flagship channel for the first time in more than a decade as part of a major rebrand.

The changes are set to hit the screen in January next year, having initially been pencilled in to take place this autumn. The overhaul will be the biggest branding shake-up at the commercial broadcaster in six years.

In addition to the decision to change ITV1’s name, its traditional yellow colour scheme will be phased out and a new series of idents will be introduced, possibly with a more flexible colour palette.

The look and feel of ITV’s digital channels will also be overhauled, and although they are set to keep their names, the likes of ITV2 will have a substantially different on-screen presence.

It's not the name that's the problem with ITV(1), it's the programmes, 99% of it is mindless reality crap or soaps

In fairness ITV have upped their game, certainly in terms of Drama and Documentaries.

    UPDATE:

ITV1 HD Granada has now changed transponders on the Sky platform from 10936V to 10994H. 12130 has now been relabelled ITV1 HD and 10936V is now only carrying three services (Alibi HD, STV HD + ITV1 HD Central W).

Sadly the lip-sync on the new 10994H ITV1 HD is still a mile out, hopefully someone at ITV will notice this! The new ITV1 HD Granada service also now has DVB subtitles and Audio Description on selected programmes.

Yes, it will go right at the end of the Entertainment Section unless Sky has bought out an EPG slot

The same will go for Sky 1, Sky 1 HD and Sky 1+ when the Sky 1+ channel launches, the EPG will need to be re-jigged then as well

Ds are now saying TCM HD launches on 4th Sept, not the 17the 17th as originally stated.

Will launch on 317, well replace SD. No word yet of which other slot will be used as the SD :)

Another Movie channel in HD is a great addition. Just need Film4 now to come to Sky - when does the exclusivity end with Virgin?

I suspect the exclusivity deal with Virgin ended some time ago. It would surprise me if the deal was for longer than a year. The non-appearance on Sky is likely to be due to contractual issues/discussions of one sort or another between Channel 4 and Sky.

May also explain the non appearance anywhere of More 4 HD despite C4's stated intentions to have it up and running by now, and possibly also the relegation by C4 of Channel 4 HD to the nether regions of Ch 230 on the Sky EPG.

At one time C4 was leading the way in HD amongst the PSBs but now seems to be doing the opposite.

3851 has moved from 10994H to 10936V, and is now showing ITV1 HD with DOG (not sure which region).

    12441V DVB-S2 QPSK SR 29500 FEC 3/4
Carrying a labelless service, which according to KoS is 3840x2160 in resolution. Obviously I can't get a picture on my Freesat box, so I'll just have to trust it unless my HTPC will do it (it's currently in pieces!). Anyone?

3851 has moved from 10994H to 10936V, and is now showing ITV1 HD with DOG (not sure which region).

    12441V DVB-S2 QPSK SR 29500 FEC 3/4
Carrying a labelless service, which according to KoS is 3840x2160 in resolution. Obviously I can't get a picture on my Freesat box, so I'll just have to trust it unless my HTPC will do it (it's currently in pieces!). Anyone?

Source for both changes: Kingofsat, verified by me.

I wasn't aware SID 3851 was active again on 10936V. Just watching now, looks like it's ITV1 Granada. Are you saying for Sky viewers that the EPG LCN 178 has been novated back to 10936V?

Thats is pure Video channel no audio playing a 4k sample video on a loop.

here are some PNG screenshots that i could actually upload, 10MB file size limit

There is more video in a city and in a container port with even more detail that take the lossless image file over 10 MB.

No, just there WAS a 3851 label on 10994H right after the previous one was renamed to ITV1 HD (ie an "extra" label with the old name that seems to happen occasionally) broadcasting nothing; now it's on 10936V broadcasting ITV1 HD. I don't have Sky.

Is this the first 4k test on broadcast satellites in Europe, or just the first on 28E (or am I wrong on both counts)?

SID 3851 was the original ITV1HD on 10936V, it obviously appeared on 10994H for a few hours mapped to the same APID and VPIDS as 12130 (the new ITV1HD) during the TP move and was then removed from 10994H. It appears Sky do this occasionally, like you noticed, possibly to avoid disruption to existing receivers tuned to the service during the TP change - the same happened with C4 from EB1 to it's Astra 1N TP.

I'm wondering if ITV wanted 10936V re-activating so they can resolve this lip-sync issue as that was, and still is, spot-on. Saying this, the new one on 10994H now also appears to be sorted too, I think just before 6pm it was still out of sync. Not that I confess to be a Black or Red viewer but it was on at home earlier on and I noticed Ant and Dec look in-sync. Just watching Jonathan Ross now and that also appears fine.

Is it normal on ITV1 London (SD) the AD soundtrack also falls silent during ads as the AD on ITV1HD Granada is working but still with no sound during ads!
