I wouldn't buy an I-pod shuffle - they are overpriced and you are purely paying for the I-pod branding. You could get another mp3 player with tons more features than the i-pod shuffle (e.g. an mp3 player which has a screen!). I recommend one of these wee beauties: link , I've got the I-bead 400 512mb and it has been a really great player. The battery life is long, the player uses a built-in lithium ion battery which immediatley starts charging when you put it into the USB port. The I-bead 400 supports a wide variety of formats - MP3, WMA, OGG and more. There is lots more information on the website.
