While answering a post elsewhere, I came across this:

Which, unless I've completely misread the first page graph, says that, broadly speaking, BBC1 and ITV1 spent about the same on programme content in the 5 years up to end of 2010. Seems to me that, if those figures are correct, BBC1 is/was getting much more "bang for the buck" than ITV1. Anyone know if a more up to date graph is available?
