Saga. Think they're only up to issue 8 or 9 but there's a trade paperback out already with 1-5 or 6 in.
Transmetropolitan is another excellent comic available in trade, though I got into Warren Ellis via his Marvel stuff along with
Global Frequency and
Planetary, also worth checking out.
Mike Carey's
Lucifer is also good, and then there's Neil Gaiman's
Sandman.
