Erich Wolfgang Korngold; Max Steiner; Franz Waxman were the pioneers of film music during the 1930s and 1940s. Heavily influenced by Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler, they produced between them some of the finest film scores ever composed such as:

The Sea Hawk
Adventures of Robin Hood
Elizabeth and Essex
Now Voyager
Gone With The Wind
Casablanca
Bride of Frankenstein

The later composers such as Elmer Berstein; John Williams; John Barry and Ennio Morricone just to mention a few owe these pioneers a great debt. Without their influence we would not have the popular film scores today which enhance the film experience.
