Article this is only in the US, not in Europe.
the problem here is that Apple and Android based phones have got the market and it will take something pretty good to knock them off the top slots. Hopefully blackberry can split the market again. Just a shame the Blackberry is out of my price range, even if money was not object, I would not pay £500 for a phone.

Some of those comments are entertaining; if Nokia had made more of the N9s, it would have likely outsold their original WP products .... but MS wouldn't let that happen.
Sailfish is interesting, but I think the one that'll catch us out is Tizen (both Tizen and Sailfish share lots of history). Samsung look to be trying to move away from a reliance on Android, and they're the ones with the clout to be able to make a "new" platform succeed.
Interesting days ahead in mobile tech, thats for sure!
My nephew got a Nokia Lumia 620 from O2 last week for £150 PAYG, I set it up for him and was surprised by how well made it is and WP8 is ideal for him as he is very Microsoft centric (XBox Live, Skype etc). I have a Samsung Galaxy SII (and an iPad) but now I would certainly consider WP8 if I needed a new phone.
*Runs Away*
Be nice to have another platform, too many big boys in he playing field.
Nokia phones was normally well built, I admit, I only had one the 3310, but I know others who have had other models and they always seems to be happy with the build.
I am going to the Vodafone shop tomorrow and see what they have got.
The thing I find incredible is that in America, a country where no-one bought Nokias ever, they still see Nokia as a reliable brand.
How would they know? No-one there ever had to deal with the N97 or N97 Mini and all it's problems or the downright terrible 5530 and the endless software problems it and many similar handsets had.
Agreed; can't understand the bloggers and "reporters" who claim that 3 major players is all that the market can sustain. Choice has to be good for the consumer, and competition can help improve the other products.
For the moment I'm holding out - due an upgrade, nothing on Android is tempting, the 920 holds no appeal (have the 808, camera is leagues ahead of the 920 which doesn't even approach my 2 year old N8). The BB is tempting, but I'll wait until OS10 appears on my Playbook.
So SIM only tariff time and start saving some money!
Depends on the developer tools.
Android, iOS and WP are distinctly different, but Tizen/Sailfish/BB10 (to an extent)/Ubuntu mobile all offer QT which may make cross platform life a lot easier for developers.
And in the case of the Linux variants (Tizen, Sailfish, Ubuntu), there's a huge number of open source developers happily lobbing code in there.
Hope these do take off to some extent and massively outsell WP - it'll demonstrate what many people thought in that Nokia made a huge mistake going the MS route.
And of course there are a lot of developers out there, and some may find they don't get the presence they expected on Android or iOS and decide to give it a go on one of the alternatives.
I thought all Lumia devices were put together by Foxconn?
Build quality use to depend on which factory a Nokia device was built, for me it was Finland > Germany > Romania > Made by Nokia (China).
Still plan on getting an 808 to replace my N8 eventually as no Lumia holds any interest for me.
That was definitely the sequence for build quality, but it seems as though the Chinese built 808 tends to be quite good - at least mine seems to be handling daily life without any major damage - had comments that it still looks new.
I'm in a similar position, albeit with both the N8 and 808. Even the Lumia 920 would be a downgrade from either of those on the camera, and can't see there being any major applications that could draw me in; have a 4S sat here that just leaves me cold.
Although the 920 in yellow does look damn good.
Coward! Stay and fight like a man... Oh wait, I have an iPhone... I don't care Hahahaha
I think I said well built, nothing about the Os they seem to stand up to the test of time build wise.
I know someone who only laid his N97 to rest last month, they seem to have been happy with it for all these years. 4 years is a long time for people to keep a mobile phone.
i suppose some people have problems, others don't.
I think that is why I went for a Sendo a few years back, only a normal flip phone, but it was a good phone. Certainly need more choice and not just with phones, but with tariffs on contract.
I know what you mean, nothing really stands out saying buy me. a android phone is a Android phone, ok you may get a faster CPU and better screens on some than others, but they are all the same on the face of it at the end of the day.
Windows phone 8 looks too much like windows 8 metro and looks pretty rigid and once you get past the front start screen, looks pretty basic .
Iphones are too expensive, even the older ones and more rigid than a windows phone.
the new Blackberry looks nice, but a lot of money to spend on something that we know nothing about and too much for me to spend on a mobile anyway
i was going to do that with the phone I have got, but my phone is playing up rotten now. I woke up this morning, had a look at the phone for the time and the thing was going through the screens and all the menus. It was like it had a mind of its own.
The thing I worry about is that it will phone someone int he middle of the night or it will go belly up and at the moment I need a working phone as my Dad was taken into hospital yesterday.
i got a cheap Vodafone make phone, which I may stick the sim in, it was my first try of a touch screen phone, only cost me £25
But yes I have to sort out what I am going to do, my contract ends in 2 months, I am in upgrade land at the moment and Vodafone knows it, i have had three phone calls now from them.
I will pop into their shop later, before I go to visit my Dad, nothing I can do until 3pm there.
Hahahaha!
I don't care either tbh, just i've noticed a lot of WP fanboys who can't take any criticism.
I agree Windows Phone 8 should have been the starting point when they released Windows Phone in 2010...
Also various Areas of their business do not work together... At this point Windows Phone Apps should run on Windows 8 and visa versa but I expect we are two years away from that happening!!!
In fact they promote other platforms for example I was in the THREE STORE at the weekend and the salesman demonstrated the great panorama app Microsoft Photosynth to someone on the Iphone 5 to show how great the camera was. Photosynth is still not available on Windows Phone 8 .... Apple would never do something so stupid !!
Having said that mobile phone market share can change very quickly... If you go back to 2010 Android was less than 5%
My reply to you was that between the time of the N96 and the N8, Nokia's build quality and reliability dropped noticeably, though it does seem to be improving again now.
Then I moved on to a related point.
Ah ha. I suppose time will tell, Sales may be shrinking at the moment, but all of a sudden it could explode, as been said Android was not a over night success.
Marketshare is shrinking but that doesn't mean sales are shrinking in absolute terms.
You may well find that sales of WP handsets in the US are increasing, they're just not increasing as quickly as the rest of the market. That's the case with, say, the iPad - Apple are selling more and more iPads but their tablet marketshare is dropping.
It's the problem of just having marketshare figures and no hard numbers to back them up.
True, sales me be going up for windows phones, but then the sales of Iphones and Android based phones are going up faster, so yes the share shrinks.
Talking about Ipads, i was using one of them earlier, i still can't see the point in them. but that is just me.
True; early on I totally ignored Android. The difference is that Android has been picked up by a huge number of phone manufacturers.
WP is only being seriously backed by Nokia, with a little support from HTC (who aren't in the best of shape) and Samsung offering a token gesture.
The Lumia 620 does tempt me as a backup phone, and maybe something that my son would like when he starts secondary school (he's currently using one of my old N8s).
Had a play with the 920 in the EE store on Friday while waiting for contract paperwork, and while its smooth/slick, the camera really isn't that good. My 808 absolutely leaves it for dead - even in low light (although you do have to mess around with settings on the 808).
I saw the first Android phone when I went into a T-mobile shop with a mate of mine. they was having a play with it behind the counter and I had a look.
I thought it was pretty impressive, but then I only had a normal phone and to be honest that is all I wanted and seeing that Android phone did not really make me want anything different.
Another mate of mine had a mate who used to show of his latest phone and what it could do, but I was not interested, I said to him all I want is a phone to make and receive calls.
I never wanted to get a smart phone to be honest.
It is a shame about HTC to be honest, my little wildfire, was a nice little phone, sure it was a bit slow now and again, but it did the job for me.
WP don't even start to tempt me to be honest, maybe because it reminds me too much of windows 8 metro or maybe because it looks boring and inflexible. Maybe it just reminds me that it is another MS product and i have had enough problems with their products over the years on my computer.
Not sure what it is, but a WP is certainly not on my short list.
i had a play with one, i can't remember the model number and yes it is pretty fast, but then it should be with the CPU under it have got.
the camera on my Huawei is not too bad for a budget phone, don't work too bad in low light. not that I use the camera for much. Just a shame about the rest of the phone.
i still have no idea what I am going to do. I think the best thing to do is to go for a sim only contract and then decide after that. But even then I am not sure if I want to stay with Vodafone or not. i got another couple of months will just over before my contract comes to the end, in upgrade period at the moment and Vodafone loves letting me know.
In one way I be happy with a normal phone, but I have got used to using a smart phone for certain things, so i may miss it if i have not got one.
i don't know, I really don't
