A very complex issue! If I buy a favourite
DVD for instance,and my grandchildren
want to keep watching it and, without any
malice, they mishandle it,drop it to the
floor etc....
Then If I make a Backup copy on my PC
purely to protect my original disc, and let
the kids play the copy, how do I stand?
Yes,I have made a COPY of a copyrighted
movie,BUT as I have bought and paid for
the disc in the first place, would that then
make ME a 'pirate'?????
Or simply someone trying to protect their
'investment' in buying the disc originally?
I think in this instance that would be fine as long as you didn't then sell on the copy you had made. I seem to remember that some early VHS tapes had anti copying software in place. I beleive it is now accepted by the industry that people will make a copy for themselves and keep the master as a back up.
