Just saw Caroline Catz in DCI Banks for the second time and I think they must have told her that she could not show any "Louisa Glasson-isms" at all in this role. But I think she did a masterful job as the character, DI Helen Morton.
Bear with me, I'm technologically challenged, so I hope all this cutting and pasting I am about to do works. I was watching Reggie Perrin tonight, series 1, episode 4, and the sweater he wears toward the end of the episode appears to be the same one he wore on a recent talk show interview. Here is the youtube clip of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvOBZCTkuiw You see the sweater at around 4 minutes 35 seconds.
That is exactly what I thought -- like she was channeling DM. It was actually a little odd. There were a couple of weird moments when she was way off-base with jokes, also.
Maybe Rob has a different take?
I agree, but the Doc never made a list of things to do to get on with the villagers. Yet Morton has an odd analytical bent unlike Martin. There is something else too that gets me. She acts almost emotionless and that jars with being a wife with four kids. There must have been trauma in her life? Perhaps that will be revealed latter.
The Great Re-watch
S4e3 "Perish Together as Fools"
Director: Ben Bolt
Writer: Richard Stoneman
Dr. Martin Ellingham is shocked to find Louisa and Aunt Joan knocking at his door before the Surgery has opened. Louisa has had a medical scare and wants Martin's reassurance that everything is fine. PC Joe Penhale's big brother Sam comes to Portwenn. Louisa moves in with an old man who wants to move to a nursing home but Martin refuses his request. The doctor is less than pleased when he hears the surgery needs to be re-decorated. Al Large goes to lengths in order to convince Pauline he is good enough for her.

I don't think he's very clothes conscious and is prepared to wear the stuff from the shows he is in out in public later. I guess they are made for him so why not? He wore his suit from DM later in public. I think it is very sensible but I cannot see an American actor doing it!! Do they?
Not sure if people were pleased or horrified that Kate's (Duchess of Cambridge) mother wore Kate's hand-me-downs. I thought it was very sensible. :):)
Several of the recent posts have addressed the part CC plays in DCI Banks and I will expand that to include MC in A Mother's Son and The Town. The missing ingredient is the direction of Ben Bolt. He knows how to pull out the best acting abilities in both of them to "make the scene".

When I saw him wearing the cardigan I was reminded of a comment he made about his character in The Town (or a Mother's Son) about how his character was so conventional, wearing his "tragic" cardigan. (I think I'm not making this up -- that he actually said this.) Of course, maybe a cardigan is less tragic if it's worn over a tee-shirt as opposed to a button down.

She does reveal moments of vulnerability, and also shows softer moments when interacting with her husband. I agree, there must be something more in her background.

My memory of his comment is that he said the Mayor was a sad man, and even his cardigan was sad. (Not as extreme as "tragic".) And Len's cardigan was sort of old and baggy, wasn't it?
We are watching them as they are shown on ITV3, which I think is now on series 2?
Really loving it and look forward to seeing them every week.
Welcome to the forum Mirage (although I can see that you CERTAINLY are no stranger to DS!) just a word of warning when reading this forum that there are some MAJOR spoilers from series 3, 4 and 5 that we discuss here. Wouldn't want to spoil your enjoyment of watching this series we all love so much
That said, if you want to try to catch up to us, you can watch the episodes on Hulu or Netflix.
Was just doing some Saturday morning surfing and found myself on a Twitter search for MC. Some fun stuff - a lot of mentions of Heavy Horsepower with about 50-50 loving it and making fun of it (lots of hamburger jokes). One person said MC should narrate everything (totally agree) and another mentioned Hunting Venus and said MC is a God (LOL!)
But the funny bit is that he apparently was In London for a few days. We saw the Twitter pic of him and we saw the pics of him seeing War Horse. But one guy tweeted on Tuesday that he was standing next to him in H & M Regent St looking at David Beckham underwear range (moving on from Calvin Klein?) and this was followed immediately by a young woman who said "Martin Clunes in Mac #celebspot #soho". Then yesterday, three different people spotted him in Waterloo Station, one said he was getting on a train to Exeter.
Maybe he and Phillipa had a nice Valentines Day outing to London? I guess he can't go anywhere without being spotted. Thought it funny that three different people tweeted about seeing him in the train station

Just looked again - it was 4 people who spotted him at the train station (all guys too!) and another person yesterday said "I saw Martin Clunes in London today!" and yet another this morning said, "Saw Martin Clunes yesterday".

Maybe he's ordering new bespoke suits for S6?
Wonder if the train is a result of driving ban....

No, I don't think American actors do the same thing...or if they do, they are torn apart for it in the media. That is one thing I love, love, love about MC, that he is such a 'normal' guy. I loved in the professional photos with his horses that he wore his jeans with the raggedy cuffs. It shows that he is actually out there working around the farm and not just paying someone else to do it for him while he poses. :D:D
This has absolutely nothing to do with the suit, but clicking on your links was interesting in that we went straight from DM in a restaurant scene with Louisa to DM in a restaurant scene with Edith. I was struck by the difference in his demeanor. With Louisa, his facial expression is softer, more vulnerable, less sure of himself. With Edith, he's all business.
I agree 100% with you Biffpup! Martin with Edith is about medicine (or so he thinks) - all cerebral - hence his shock when she exposes her lacy lingerie.
But with Louisa Martin tries to be softer and gentler, as well as more vulnerable, although at times she should take her brown purse and clout him upside the head! But then he usually puts his foot in it...

And of course this episode includes the infamous button scene, which I put into one of my stories as a memory...

As for auditioning, once a long time back the Tom Selleck movie "An Innocent Man" (1989) was being shot here in our city in our disused city jail. On a Saturday morning they held a casting call for extras for the prison scenes. I dearly wanted to go, but was buried in family stuff. I read the next day they had 4,000 men show up, and then only took 50!
Wonder if the train is a result of driving ban....
If it were me and I was coming into London for a day trip from the countryside to go to meetings/appointments or just plain ol' goofing around and shopping I would not drive to London unless I absolutely had to or unless I really enjoyed the headaches driving in London generate. The traffic is atrocious, parking is rare, horrible (and expensive) and you have to pay the congestion charge to bring a car into central London on the weekdays. Much easier to take the train, tube, cab and walk-especially if all the activities you have planned are in central London or just the West End.

That would explain it.
In the US Actresses seem to be given designer outfits so the designer gets their name known.

"We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."
Martin Luther King Junior-- Speech in St. Louis, Missouri, March 22, 1964
I take it DM and LG (and others in this ep) can't learn to "live together".
Yes it is the same one.

Some guy saw him shopping for underwear at HMV.
That's my TS close call, sort of.
