My prediction after the PS4 announcement is Kinect will take over the motion gaming market. Tablet gaming will take over everything else Ipad will do well. Wii U might be a surprise success. PS4 will be a flop with it's Vita support and lack of wow features.
The move towards social networking will struggle with Smart TV's, Sky, Apple TV offering video on demand already.
For me I doubt there will be a PS5..Sony will head the way Sega went.

I suspect xbox and ps will go neck in neck again next gen
Gamers want the proper full on games and xbox and ps deliver that not shitty tablets games that are good for an hour or so
Tell me i've fallen asleep and i dreaming the parts in bold
And really about what 4/5 hours after the console is announced you are already calling it a failure....really *facepalm*
at least with every other console people wait for week ones sales before jumping on the fail bandwagon
The Wii U was officially announced in 2011 (a week before E3 in fact) but the specs were only confirmed a year later at E3 2012 and clock speeds weren't confirmed (unofficially) until after it went on sale, 5+ months later. Nintendo still haven't officially confirmed the CPU or GPU clock speeds.
Kinect has been a disaster when it comes to AAA game support. Sure 20 million people threw money at it in the first year and people started doing some cool things with it on PC, but for gaming... as it was released as a game input device for the 360 (you are the controller), it is the biggest piece of sh*t I have seen this gen. Its main function in most games has been as an overpriced headset as can be seen with the likes of Mass Effect 3, Dead Space 3, NBA 2K13, Madden NFL 13, FIFA 13, Binary Domain and even their big exclusives like Forza Horizon and Halo.
Things could change with Kinect 2.0 on the Nextbox, but it will need to be more like Move, meaning that the camera will need to be able to integrate and track the controller and the controller will need to have some kind of technology in it (similar to the SixAxis functionality in the DualShock 3/4) so that the console knows exactly how the controller is oriented. If Kinect 2.0 once again relies soley on you being the controller then... well, at least there will be another Just Dance.
Move didn't sell nearly as well but its use in every single game (AAA or otherwise) has been as a proper input device.
Pretty much everything includes social networking now. Many forums/communites allow you to log in with your existing social netwroking credentials or the ability to link them (DigitalSpy does it, as does Steam) so Sony has little choice if it wants to stay relevant in this increasingly digital media based future that we are heading into. Plus the functionality already exists (albeit in a limited fashion) on the PS3.
You're underwhelmed because you bought into the hype of the announcement. I'd have liked to have seen pics of it and a price tag but I don't know what people expected Sony to show.
This is why tablet gaming won't be taking over. The explosion in tablet gaming is an entirely different kind of gaming. It's like saying the new mini will kill the 4x4 market.
The real question I have is; how are they going to drive the ecosystem (software, online, user experience)? How will it all fit together, and what is the "must have" feature that the experience brings?
I'm sure once upon a time not so long ago people were saying tablets weren't the future too.
60+ million tablets are now sold per quater and will surpass PC sales this year. You really think there is no possible way they could exploit that for gaming?
Any gaming development company who chooses to ignore such a huge market is committing suicide.
Playing games on my iPod bores the shit out of me in less than a minute.
Angry Birds FTW - shotgun to head, trigger pulled...
Does a game being downloaded a billion times indicate a shift in the industry?
Not for me. Mobile phones also outsell PC sales, and the notion that they are the future of gaming pretty much died years ago.
Tablet gaming might have it uses, but will it ever be as immersive or as innovative as games on PC or console? When I talk about the future, I mean the quality of the games, not how many times it is downloaded. I find it hard to see a game on tablet ever putting the consoles or PC to shame tbh.
Hahaha Thanks for the giggle OP, I needed one on a depressing morning like this.
edit: - I'd agree that the backward compatibilty could be a problem for sony though, just read about that
I can see this changing, if you think how far Tablets have moved on during the last gen of gaming (since the 360 / ps3 came out), literally coming from know where to where we are now with so many people using them, up until now they have been using games designed for mobile phones just on a bigger screen but i can see much more complex games coming out very soon.
I play on my tablet / phone a lot more than on my 360 now just due to time restrictions, the fact that i can be waiting in the car for someone or just getting 5-10 minutes to sit down and play i just use my phone or tablet.
That's cute. Just a shame nobody want to invest in big budget PC exclusive titles these days, eh?
I mean with all that RAW POWER available, surely developers are FLOCKING to the PC.
I dont have a PS3 so makes little difference to me but i think it should be backwards compatible, the PS3 has been out so long its not fair to just tell the people with huge games library's tough luck, also when i first had my 360 i was still using it to play the original xbox games due to the lack of and price of the new games
Backwards compatibility is the biggest none existent problem in gaming and that is why it will be difficult for sony to overcome
The thing is, if you own a PS3 and a bunch of PSN games and are complaining that they won't work on the PS4, why can't you just continue playing them on the PS3?
lots of people tend to sell / trade in their old consoles and the games they are not bothered about to help fund the new machine holding back the games they love
Backwards compatibility for the PS3, or lack thereof, is disappointing but not an absolute deal-breaker as I'll still have the PS3 knocking around anyway. I'd be more interested to hear what the deal is with PS One Classics or 3rd party games bought through the PS Store.
The raft of titles sounds pretty good - Destiny (with exclusive content), a new KZ game, a new FF game. Nice.
For me, I'd need to have a closer look at the controller - it looks slightly bigger and bulkier, which would be a major plus, and I'd want to see how the 'party' side of the system works.
Then it isn't a problem that the PS4 doesn't have BC
its more gamer expecting the world for as little as possible
if you want to play old games keep the required games console it's that simple, when my 60GB PS3 broke and i wanted to play a PS1/2 game guess what i did, i got my old PS2 and the games still worked :O
dont really see how its 'expecting the world', considering the current gen machines are already backward compatible, more like Sony want you to buy their new console and games and not play the old titles.
I think it was a very blah kind of announcement not even pics of the console or a firm release date but i suppose this was just putting the minimum out there and waiting for what Microsoft do
Cloud gaming.
This is what sony seem to be pushing for, you will be able to play ps4 games on the current vita, the hardware requirements for cloud gaming are very basic, actually my current £100 phone could probably play ps4 games with the right software.
All sony need to do is release an android app, and have you login and access your games.
simply plugin a ps4 controller to your tablet and you can play all the latest games.
In theory you can play ps4 games on nearly anything running a o/s and a usb port, so a phone, ipad, android, pc.
There could simply be on cloud gaming, and all devices play the same game, xbox,ps3,android, apple-tv.
That all brings up an interesting question, is the console as we know it on its way out?
If people have a choice between either shelling out £400 for a console and play most of their £50 games they buy wahtever way they want (offline or online).
OR
using their existing smart tv with a free app and a ps4 controller, then buying the same game in the ps store for £40 and playing it online
Which would you choose.?
I can also see a subscription coming in where you pay £20 per month and that basically allows your device to become ps4 and would give you access to certain free games(perhaps the ps2/ps2 back catalogue?
Who knows, but the industry is chaanging.
