Leaving Las Vegas
Watched this the other day and it's one of the most depressing films I've ever seen but loved it at the same time. I normally hate Nicholas Cage as well but think he is brilliant in this. Think he won an Oscar for it too. It's a fairly oldish movie now but portrays a vivid reality of alcoholism and doesn't have that usual Las Vegas glam you with with other films set there.

It's certainly not filed in the Feelgood section, is it?
I mentally file it with Wild at Heart in the Remember When Nicholas Cage Appeared In Films Worth Watching category.
Great performance by Elizabeth Shue as well. Who would have guessed that a clean-living gal like the Karate Kid's girlfriend would end up on the game, eh?
on my re-watch list.
awesome film.
you getting confused with showgirls???
Elisabeth Shue is incapable of looking anything but absurdly hot.
Even when she's playing an abused hooker, avoiding being killed by the Invisible Man, or shooting hungry piranhas with a massive gun.
Like you, I'm not that keen on Cage, but when he's good, he's exceptional. When he's not, then exceptionally bad. He's the latter these days. Shame, really. I'm indifferent to Elisabeth Shue because her performances didn't vary much throughout her career. She's a lot like Mare Winningham in so many ways. Glimpses of brilliance, but average as a whole.
LLV was good, though.
Should give it a watch, I'm sure the DVD will be really cheap now.
