To the Wonder

When reviewed on Radio 4's Front Row Terrence Malick's latest was mocked as being like a perfume commercial (' Malick'). A cruel jibe, yet it does point to a certain truth - that the rest of the world has caught up.

To the Wonder very slowly coasts along as a series of brittle and gorgeous images, but with only a few half-thought out ideas of love and relationships to back them up. The cast tries hard - Affleck especially - but there's only so much that can be done with pauses and glances. This is a less ambitious/pretentious (take your pick) film than Tree of Life, which some may be grateful for. However, like Tree of Life, this is still at its heart pure soap. Ho-hum. 6/10
