Well it was a tough one but i had to go with The Good the Bad and the Ugly for me Ennio Morricone is a Genius, if hairs dont stand up on the back of your neck when listening to that i dont know what will.
Theres actually a few i really do like. So heres some of my favorites in no order.
Ben Hur
Star wars all 6 in tearms of music
Superman
Batman and batman returns
Home alone 1 and 2.

Nice to see that one chosen ...it was played on John Wilson's Proms on Radio 3 a few weeks ago ...
I love so many ...Cinema Paradiso is a great favourite....
I'm with the OP as far as Morricone is concerned....think I'd go for 'For A Few Dollars More'; particularly the part of the score with Lee Van Cleef's musical pocket watch. Yep, total genius. Beautiful music.
Closely followed by Nino Rota, especially his score for Fellini's '8 and a half' which is magical.
Also love the soundtracks of the Jacques Tati films, particularly 'Mon Oncle' and 'Playtime'.
I prefer soundtracks that largely have original scores vs ones that are more like compilation albums (theres nothing wrong with the latter approach, but obviously it's less creative).
For me the soundtrack is one of the key things that helps to sell a movie to me, so it's hard to pick a favourite, if I had to short list ten I'd go with (in no particular order):
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Piano, The Artist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List, Star Wars: A New Hope, The Red Shoes, Spellbound,The Wizard of Oz, Brokeback Mountain.
I love the soundtrack to the 1980 version of Flash Gordon, composed by Queen. Absolutely brilliant, with parts of the dialogue put into the album, it was like seeing the film again in those days before home video was commonplace. All together now, "GORDONS ALIVE!"

I forgot about Paris, Texas, great soundtrack by Ry Cooder who also scored another film called Southern Comfort.
My favourite soundtrack from the last couple of years would probably be Drive.

I also usually really enjoy the way Tarantino uses tracks in his films
