One horse race?

The PS4 seems to be winning the hearts and minds of console gamers. Meanwhile, the Xbox One is under attack from every angle, while the Wii U is being largely ignored.
Could we see the nightmare scenario of a one horse console race in the next generation, where a lack of competition stagnates the industry?
Do we need the PC market more than ever to keep Sony on its toes?
Will Microsoft and Nintendo's fortunes improve?
Is it time for some fresh blood to enter the marketplace?

I can see the PS4 dominating this gen.
I wrote this in another thread about how we shouldn't write MS off just yet.
The PS3 was in an awful position around launch and came under attack for almost everything they did or their people said. There was a fairly long period were people kept saying that Sony was about to do a SEGA. They eventually acknowledged their faults and tried as hard as they could to turn things around with a lot of success as the console which was guaranteed to make third place in the sales charts by many has actually moved into second place and over taken the 360 (Or is close at least (My point been many people thought that was impossible in the early days of PS3)).
MS have not made an moves which they cannot change or rectify, every decision is a software one which could be change or reversed its not like they have made a console like the Wii in which it would have been impossible for them to have changed things had the decided they needed a console with the power of the 360 and PS3 (This is just an example, not a diss at the Wii).
What, you mean like Valve with the SteamBox or the Ouya.
Or VR on the PC with Oculus Rift.
Or even the current generation of tablets. Most of the dedicated console crowd don't see these as gaming machines. However, a lot of the non-hardcore gamers out there do. It may explain (at least partly) why Nintendo are having such a hard time. The Wii picked up mostly casual gamers. I'd guess a lot of them are happy playing Candy Crush and Draw Something on their tablet so haven't paid much attention to the next gen Wii.
There is plenty out there if you look beyond the blinkered boundaries offered MS and Sony (and Nintendo).
I honestly don't see why people are getting so excited about the new consoles. Just looks like more of the same to me. Nothing very ground breaking .....
While that is true just look at the improvements Sony made to the PS3 due to good strong competition from MS with the 360. Anyone who has had a PS3 long enough to remember the original PSN store or the time when we had no in-game XMB have Microsoft to thank for that at least in part.
Its totally up to them now, I just hope they don't leave to late.
Well, as mentioned in my opening post, I was specifically talking about the console segment of the market, hence my comment about the PC market (in which I would include Steambox and Occulus Rift) perhaps becoming increasingly important to the wider industry.
Tablets and phones are a valid form of gaming entertainment, but in a manner that lives alongside consoles in my opinion.
I'm fully aware that there are other ways to game out there, (I use pretty nmuch all of them in one way or another) but the console market is an integral part of the industry, has been for decades, and I was curious to know if gamers were concerned about the apathy and aggression that some of the major players in the console sector are experiencing right now.
sony rarely put ads out in comparison
ms sales will be fine
millions will sell purely based on halo an early cod dlc
Another option would be to keep paying for exclusives.
Microsoft on the other hand has its giant PC OS and Office empire to fund anything they want, with little fear of failure. Worst case for them is a total xbox failure would mean withdrawal from the market, but even thats a push, they could try again, they have that much money to throw at it.
Nintendo has the handheld market under control, so they can ease off.
PC gaming is different and doesnt really compete the same way.
I don't think MS could exit the market and then just stroll back in and pick up where they left off. If MS went bye bye to the console industry, that void would almost certainly be filled by PS4.
MS need to salvage what they can of their current 360 market share, by cutting all the crap from the Xbox One, and they need to do that before launch or they will loose everything the 360 has done.
PS4 is more powerful than the Xbone for start off.
I recently bought an expensive set of headphones, if I were to choose to buy Xbone I would have to buy another set if I wanted to do in game chat.
In the past my internet connection has gone down 3 or 4 days at a time meaning I would be unable to play it.
I would have to pay an extra £80 for one.
Cant buy 2nd hand games without an extra charge
Cant rent games.
The downside is some of the exclusive games looked really good and I will have to wait an extra 30 days to play COD DLC content on PS4. But I can live with all that due to the points I made above.
I wouldnt write anyone off at this stage, prime example is the Sega dreamcast, a fantastic console way ahead of its time, very popular with those who bought it, but struggled big style.
