Hey guys! I had the pleasure of seeing Joe perform in East Croydon on Thursday with my friend Ness, and I have now started writing my review, so enjoy!

My review of Joe at East Croydon.

So, it’s Thursday the 7th May at about 1.15 in the afternoon, and me and my friend Ness are all dressed up smart and ready to go out. hmmm, I wonder where we could be going? Yep, you’ve guessed it, to see Joe!
Ness is a newly converted fan, who came with me to see Joe at East Grinstead this year. I’d wanted to go to Croydon for ages, but Megan couldn’t make it because of exams and I didn’t want to go on my own, so a few weeks ago, I had a brainwave. I rang Ness and asked her what she was doing in the beginning of May and whether she fancied coming down to see me for 3 or 4 days and how did a trip to see Joe perform sound? Of course, she jumped at the opportunity, and came down from the Tuesday until the Saturday.
She’s not a big fan of the underground, so we decided to use the Uber taxi app to get us there and split the cost between us. We left mine and stood outside to book our taxi, little did we know it would be the first of many failed attempts. The app said the driver was on his way, so I called him to check he had the right address and to tell him we had Brodie, my guide dog travelling with us as well. He said that he does not take pets in his car. I told him that Brodie is a working dog, but he still refused us and cancelled the trip. Feeling frustrated, we booked a second. Went through the same procedure and the next driver said that dogs are unclean animals and he doesn’t take them. He too, cancelled the trip.
We were just about to give up, but me being determined, tried once more. The next driver we got was lovely! He took us all the way to the venue and handed us over to the staff there. We were rather late, the original plan had been to meet Trudy at around 2pm, but we didn’t arrive until 3. We were wondering where everyone was and I suggested to the staff that they might be at the stage door. The guy who we had seemed very reluctant to take us round, he said to his colleague, do i really have to walk all that way? what if I get them there and there’s no one around? She just told him to get on with it, so, rather reluctantly, he did.
When we got round there we saw Marylou, Heidi and it was either Helen or Liz, I can’t remember which. We perched ourselves on a wall and talked about all things Joe. Ness was so excited, but I told her not to get her hopes up just in case he didn’t stop. Marylou told us that the band van was already there, but Joe hadn’t arrived so hopefully we would be in luck.

An hour went by and people were starting to think about going back to their hotels to change and get ready and stuff, but then Joe turned up with David and Julia I think. I have never seen Ness move so fast! she jumped up so quick! Joe got out of the car and he was like, I’ll come out later! he had to rush in, because it was a show with the full band, and he needed to soundcheck, he was late, I think normally he arrives between 3 and half 3, but he didn’t arrive until 4.
Ness was so upset! She was crying and everything, she just said to me, so close, but yet so far! I said to her, let’s give it 10 minutes, and we’ll see if he comes out. Trudy and Heidi were still with us which was nice. After Joe left, MaryLou went to go back to her hotel. We sat back down and waited. We were just starting to think about leaving, when Heidi said the magic words, “he’s coming!”
well, Ness was like a jack in the box! Up she jumped! Joe came straight over to us and gave us both a massive hug! He asked how we were and he was like, “This must be Brodie! How is he?” I told him that Brodie was fine and that it was ness’s first time meeting Joe too!
He asked if we wanted pictures. Now Ness, bless her, has a stammer when she talks, so she found it so hard to say the line, You can take the pictures on my phone! So Joe took a selfie with Ness and one with me, and Heidi also got some pics which she later emailed me, including a picture of Joe and Brodie which was cool!
The first thing Ness said when Joe left was just like my friend Chessie! “Oh my god! He smells so good!” to be fair, I thought that too! He really did smell amazing!
I was just so happy for Ness, and I really enjoyed seeing Joe again too!
Heidi took us back inside and we sat with Trudy and waited for a cafe to open. We chatted about all things Joe, and met up with some more fans. 2 older fans joined us, Jenny and Angy I think their names were, and Jacky was there too, and the lovely Amanda! Jacky and Amanda both had VIP!
When the cafe opened we went and got food, and the lovely Trudy treated us, thanks again Trudy for that! we had a toasty, crisps and a cuppa.
After her VIP, Amanda bless her, came over to me and Ness and asked us what we would like off the merch stand, she got us a scarf each and a ristband. Thanks again Amanda!
At about 7.15 we went down to the staff and they helped us find our seats. We were up looking down on the stage. We had so much room for Brodie which was good! Then, I realised we had a stuard about 2 feet to the right of me. aah, I thought, recording for you guys is going to be a problem! Turns out I was wrong!
The male stuard later explained to me that Joe was the first performer that came in before the show, and said to them, please can you not put any restrictions on my fans recording and filming? They said he was a lovely guy and couldn’t wait to see the show.
A load of people came over and stroked Brodie and gave him loads of fuss and attention! I got my dictaphone set up and my phone with the live stream for everyone else.

So, the show began, and it sounded really magical! I really wished I could see the lights, i bet they looked amazing! The drums really added to the atmosphere as well! I love the little thing they recorded with Joe’s voice, and the chime thing they had going too! I could actually see the lights when they were really bright, you hear me on my recording saying “woe! Bright lights!” the way the drums kicked in with Joe’s voice was just great, and then the guitar! amazing! The little heartbeat sound at the end I liked as well!
The first song, was dance with my father! This was really good with the band, but I personally, prefer this song acoustic and Ness agrees, because I feel that you can hear more of Joe’s emotion in the acoustic version! He still gave an amazing rendition of this as always! I wasn’t crying, at least, not yet!
The sound was pretty good where we were! The drums distort a bit on my audio recording, but unfortunately I can’t really do anything about that, but it’s still really clear!
The next song, was somebody to love! Joe was stunning at this! I loved the reverb they put on his voice, it really suited this song, and the band really added to it as well and made it really good!
I could really tell in this song that the audience were warming to him, everyone seemed to be clapping along and having a good time! All you can hear on my recording is every now and then me and Ness just saying “wow! he’s amazing!” it’s true though, Joe just gets better and better every time! I think because I don’t get to see him as much as some fans, I treat every time like it’s my last, and just go and have fun!
I was saying to Trudy while we were eating, how Hayley really inspired me! I remember 4 or 5 years ago posting on Joe’s appreciation thread saying i’d love to be like Hayley, Joanne, Hazel, everyone, just to be able to go and see Joe when I want, travel up and down the country, and now, here I am! There’s no way that 2 years ago I would have just said to Ness, come on, let’s go and see Joe! and this independence just feels so good!!!
Up next, Joe said how he was going to take us back to a moment that we’d all know well, and he was going to sing the climb.
I completely forgot he’d changed it up, but the moment he started singing, me and Ness were in awe!
It just sounded so different! I remember watching videos on youtube of this version and thinking, what on earth has Joe done to this song, but hearing it live, I loved it!
Like Ness, I loved Alewin on the guitar, and Matt on drums, wow! The power in Joe’s voice was just amazing on this song! His long notes were just breathtaking!
I still have no idea how Brodie manages to sleep through the whole of a Joe show, he was flat out even with the drums and all the noise!
The next song was Wide awake!
I’d been hoping Joe would include this as i’d told Ness how good it was live with the band! Again, Joe smashed this song! I was really hoping he would do the magical bit at the end, but unfortunately he didn’t. i wonder if he was getting changed at the end of this song? Ross was playing for a while on the piano before Love of my life, so i’m guessing Joe was getting changed? But Wide awake was amazing!
Joe put loads of emotion into the song and it was nice to just hear him, and Ross, a real, stripped back, beautiful performance!
Joe then asked us if we were ok and said he was going to get a drink, but he said there’s never a right moment in the show to get a drink and he said he’s normally on all fours scrabbling around to get a drink in the dark on stage!
The next song, was Ness’s favourite, canto della terra!
The moment he introduced this song, she was just gripping hold of my hand so tight! There’s something about this song though, when he sings it live, just… wow!!!! Major major goosebump moment! I think it’s his low notes, I love it so much when he sings in his lower register! I’m not technical when it comes to singing, but to me, it sounds beautiful! I really liked the drums on the second verse, they really added to it too! I noticed like at east grimstead, Joe cheated on the big high note, and went down instead of up! It still sounded amazing and me and Ness clapped, cheered and screamed! Ness is very vocal on my recording as you will be able to tell!

During the interval the stuard came and spoke to us and said about Joe asking for no filming restrictions. A fan came over to see Brodie too and she told us how she had interviewed Joe at her school and said how lovely he was! Trudy also came past and said hey too!
Me and ness came to the conclusion that it was the longest 20 minute interval ever, it really seemed to drag on!
One of the stuards said she’d stand by us and help us out if we got picked for jukebox Joe. we had 2 requests, Ness was gonna ask him to sing a bit of See you again, the fast and furious song, and I was going to ask him to sing happy birthday as it’s ness’s birthday in a few weeks, and I really thought that would make her day!
The first song after the interval was Love Is War! it’s so cool and different with the band, all rocked up and everything! I do appologise for Ness’s crazy screaming in the second half, she got up to dance and that was it! I could tell Joe was having the time of his life! I really do enjoy his uptempo stuff especially with the band! I love all the extra high notes he adds to this song!
Up next was Human! Everyone was clapping, dancing, cheering! You can hear my awful singing on this one! I admire you guys who used to be in JMP, how do you manage to record and not sing along? I try, so you guys get a clear recording, but it just doesn’t work!
Matt was amazing on this one too, you hear me saying how amazing the drums are.
    Up next was jukebox Joe.
The first person requested something that Joe didn’t know, then he got asked for Madona so he sung Hung up. This was really cool with the drums and Ross!
This was one of the most random jukebox joe ever!
Up next was Jar of Hearts. He said he might have to make the words up, but he sang it really well, and it sounded beautiful!
Someone then asked for something off the fifth album, and Joe was like, you don’t know what’s gonna be on there do you?
Then he got asked for e penso aterre. He started singing and then was like, what a random song! He sang it really well though! I wonder if it was MaryLou who asked for it as I know she really likes this one!
Up next was single ladies! This was epic with Matt on the drums, it was so cool! The crowd loved it and joined in.
He got asked for love me like you do, and then something you need. He was really good at this one too!
He then got asked for an Elvis song. He sang I can’t help falling in love with you.
I loved Joe’s lower range on this one, it sounded really good! He forgot the words though and so he started singing to the tune, He sang to the tune, I don’t know, the next words to the song, so i’ll just sing my own, to stop it from being awkward! It was so cool how he sang that to the tune of the song!
He then got asked for I wanna make you mine, which is a song that he wrote. This is beautiful and i’m glad he sang a bit of it for jukebox!
He then got asked for Sway, I remember he sang this on week 3 of the x factor. Ness loved this one!
The final request was Nessun Dorma, which as always, was amazing!
Up next, was a song that I wasn’t expecting, Farenheit! This was really good with the band, and I loved Joe’s falsetto in it too! Everyone was just up, dancing and having a good time!

Up next was Don’t stop believing, Joe told us to get our air guitars out! This was great with the band! He then took it into Uptown funk! This was great and everyone was joining in! i love joe singing this song!
He got us to repeat and sing after him and everyone was! He put loads of energy in this, and everyone was just having a party!
Up next was the new, rocked up verision of Someone wake me up! I loved it! again matt on the drums was really cool, ailwin on the guitar, I love it how they change the set up and keep it fresh! Joe is just such a world class live performer, and I just want the whole world to see him perform!
Up next was a song, which i’m ashamed to say, i’d forgot about until Joe sang it! Hollywood! This is what i’d love album 5 to sound like, this is such an upbeat catchy song, surely it would sell on the radio? it’s got such a good upbeat feel to it, and kind of country, I could imagine it doing well if Joe ever did smash America!
I just love this song so much!
We then had the encore and people were clapping, stamping on the floor and were even chanting! i’m not sure if it was, please don’t go, or, we want Joe! but he came out again and did his cool thing with ambitions and the Michael Jackson medley! I loved that so much! we clapped, cheered, screamed and went crazy at the end!
I couldn’t believe that the show was over, Joe was simply incredible! we waited until the crowds had gone down and the stuard took us to the front of the theatre to book our taxi. He said he was thoroughly impressed with joe!
we booked our first uber taxi, and we got refused again. We booked our second, and the driver took us all the way home, we were home within half an hour!
Yesterday, we wrote to uber on twitter and told them about the service we’d received, they contacted the drivers and took the approrpriate action and they also refunded our journeys as they said we shouldn’t have had such a bad service! what an amazing show though! i so want to go again! I’m so proud to be a supporter of joe, and no matter what he does next, i’ll always support him!

Great pics and review Jade, thank you! :) Aww sounds like you guys had a wonderful time and good to know Joe actually asks on our behalf to be allowed to record him - bless him for that! And bless you for recording for us who couldn't be there too, you're a star :)

And to answer your question re how those of us who used to be in JMP managed not to sing along ... it's not easy and doesn't always happen :D My biggest problem though is to stop myself dancing with a camera in my hand in the 2nd half of the show (which is always like a big party!) - so I don't always record that part, I generally join in :D

I hope to see you at another show soon Jade and thanks again :)

hey guys! I just realised that a small part of my review was missing, I know it's not in order, but i'll post it here, because it still counts. :)
Up next, was I look to you.
This song set me off. There was something special about Joe’s performance of this tonight, he just put so much emotion, so much passion, I just burst into tears! I really noticed it in the second half of the song, he just literally put his everything into this song! Ness said to me that this song makes her think of me, because she said that when she feels down or upset, she looks to me!
We were both a blubbering reck at the end of this! Just the power in his voice, the emotion, the drums, Alewin being amazing on guitar, this was just a stunning performance, possibly my favourite song of the night!
How we love was amazing as always! Just Joe, and Ross! pure, stripped back, heaven! I said to Ness that Joe definitely performs this better live than on the album! that long note at the end, you could have heard a pin drop in the room, it was silent! Both me and Ness cried during this one. It’s just got such a true message, all that matters, is how we love!
Up next was the last song before the interval, time to say goodbye!
Joe sang this amazingly as always, and I loved the long note at the end! we clapped, cheered and went crazy!

I have, LL2! Now I've twigged that the ends can be recycled and I haven't just got 80 redundant sticks on my hands ... duh!

This clip from last night's show in Yeovil - thanks to Paula - proves what a natural comedian he is :D
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jAylOx8Htg

That humour is what makes his shows so addictive, along with his fabulous voice. He's a natural entertainer :)

Will be missing the next 10 shows :( but luckily the fan base has always been great at sharing (Paula's clip above being an example) so that will keep me going for the next few weeks :) & can't wait till next month!

Despite more dates coming up, there are still no dates in south central although Poole is the nearest but again I cannot get back easily, especially in the winter when the ferries are reduced!

Late to the party, sorry LL2! But wow yes it was a fantastic show and spot-on review :)
Joe's such a brilliant showman and only getting better, not sure how he manages that. Will have withdrawal symptoms now the 1st leg of the tour is finished ... but the 2nd part of Evolution returns in October, yay!

Meantime, there's Tommy in September to look forward to :) - can't wait to see him reprise the lead in that, will be interesting to see the difference 3 years on from his stint in the West End.

Big announcement from Joe on Twitter! He is to star in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat next year on a nationwide tour! I love that musical - so funny!

After an unavoidably slow start (he has to literally grow into the role) the evening belongs to 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry. ... very capable and he is completely believable as the impaired pinball wizard-turned-reluctant rock star and prophet.

On it's limited run (until 26th September), before speculated considerations, this 'Sensation' is not one to be missed! Featuring a great cast, great setting and of course great music brought to life by Robert Wicks' band - with special mention to 'electric' guitarist Jake Willson who appears occasionally from the slot in the set to set the mood - although some of the music repeats, as one audience member remarked "you never get bored."

Sometimes, a production just takes your breath away.

Tommy the rock musical did just that.
2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry, playing the title role Tommy, absolutely nails the challenging performance while his voice soars into the corners of the huge Winter Gardens theatre.

He builds rapport with the audience and is obvious why he struck a chord with the X Factor audience in the first place. He has presence and connects with the audience, his emotional journey through the production as clear as day.

Was lucky enough to see the opening shows on Saturday and wow - it really is superb! So brilliant I've booked tickets for a couple of extra shows I hadn't intended to!
Joe's voice is outstanding and there's not one weak link among the rest of the cast.
My other favourite among them is Ashley Birchall (who played the title role of Tommy at Greenwich Theatre last month) - he's compelling to watch as the Hawker and a very accomplished actor/performer.

Hope you get a chance to see it Gill, fingers crossed for you!
