Windows 7 or 8?

I currently am using Vista on my PC. It's working fine, no complaints, except Vista doesn't support html 5, which I have a need for.
So, I'm thinking of upgrading, but aren't sure whether to get windows 7 or 8. I've heard quite bad things about 8 and it's interface, but I understand you can get software to restore the classic windows interface,
Any of you folks got thoughts on this?.
I use my PC for gaming, fractal generation and internet browsing at home. It's quite a high spec one.
Thanks

Gaming is done full-screen, many people browse full screen and you probably do your fractal generation full-screen too.
Windows 8 will be fine for you. You can pin your few programs to the taskbar. Some people are so offended by the sight of Metro, they can't withstand it for more than a few seconds, they need Metro.
For the rest of us, we get along just fine in windows 8 and the utilities are available for free/cheap if you do want a classic start menu option.
It's on Windows 7 now as well.
Windows 8.1 where?
Just my 2 cents
Trouble with opposing Microsoft's changes is you lose out in future proofing your PC. For example it is highly unlikely that IE11 will find it's way onto Windows 7, and since the theme of this thread is HTML5 compliance, such opposition to Windows 8 would impede the OP's objective.
That being said, my previous post (why not use Firefox or Chrome?) seems to have gone unnoticed, which I find unusual because it would facilitate HTML5 compliance without the need to change operating system at all.
There's some more information about it here:

Maybe IE11 will find its way to W7. It depends on how long MS want to support it for. Anyway there's always such a thing as another browser We're not in the 90s/early 00s any more where nearly every Windows user was using IE.
He means he can't use it!!............:D
8 is terrible. It hasn't improved and I doubt 8.1 will do anything unless they essentially remove metro and all the crap like charms bar etc.
Its a terrible OS + My Laptop on it booted faster.... but took ages to load the desktop which defeated the object of fast boot.
Windows 8 Desktop and Start button with Start menu loads instantly on my PC (once it has booted up). I also installed the free Classic Shell which I use to completely suppress the silly Metro tiles interface. I literally never see Metro or any charms, unless I feel masochistic and choose to press the Winkey.
Windows 8 (with Metro and charms suppressed) is an improvement for me over Windows 7, so I recommend that the O/P buys that, and installs Classic Shell (or similar).
Are you sure? My windows 7 laptop has IE 10 on it.
Yes, it's available for W7 now.
I think I would wait until until windows 8.1 is out to see what they have in that. I wouldn't be comfortable on using third party software to alter the OS user interface in case it got disabled or suddenly wasn't supported anymore.
You could always go into PC world and get someone to demo windows 8 to see if you can live with the interface.
Finally can't you get html5 support on your current system by using chrome or firefox ?
There is no suggestion that they will disable any TP software. Even if they did, it would not render W8 unusable.
So many people just scaremongering in the hope that MS will bend completely for them. Which, of course, they are not going to.
Lets say a office of 6 people , 3 women in there 30's and 3 men of mixed ages 23 ,40 & 55 running accounting software & excel currently 3 xp & 3 win 7 machines with dropbox as the central backup .
Now try to introduce that dreadful toytown win 8 to the equation , all of a sudden they all cant work - nothing works as it should
Result is new machines being reformatted and win 7 reinstalled . Metro might be OK for phones and tablets but for real work as opposed to play time its hopeless !
Or IT manager simply sets up account software icons and excel etc and they just click the icon that they need...which is probably what they do now.
Oh the drama. Nothing says click me like a huge square button on a start screen named Excel. Start screen with necessary applications set right on the left hand side actually simplify things imo.
I'm using firefox. When I try to use html5 it complains about something called "h.264" not compatible under vista. (I'm using 64 bit Vista).
Yes I realise that but you have gone from being a work item to something that needs handholding 8 hours a day . Too much of a learning curve for no benefit , there should have been either a business edition or a microsoft supplied bolt on front end to make the thing work out of the box rather than messing with 3rd party add ons . I dont have any issues with w8 under the skin its just as good as w7 .
Mk2 might fix ??
Where is the hand holding? Most people need Windows 7 seeting up for them and Windows 8 is no different.
Did you try chrome ?
You may be able to download a codec to enable h.264
Yeah... downloading and installing the codec pack linked below should get it working on Firefox on Vista
