Adobe Flash won't download, but do I need it?

Virtually every time I turn on my computer, I get a reminder to download Adobe Flash Player. Clicking on the download button and deselecting the offer to install Google Chrome, a window opens showing two Security Warning Dialogue boxes: (a) File Download - Security Warning, with options to to RUN, SAVE or CANCEL and (b) Internet Explorer - Security Warning, with options to RUN, DON'T RUN. These boxes are not active and are just examples of active boxes that are supposed to appear when the Download Now button is pressed (except they don't appear). I have tried pressing the Adobe Flash Player download button, but nothing happens. I've tried turning off the Web protection, as suggested but, aside from putting my computer at risk, nothing happens, so finally I abort any attempt to download, and switch my web security back on. Until, that is, the next time I boot up, when, once again, I am reminded of how beneficial Adobe Flash Player is and how many millions of devices use it, at which point, I go through the whole procedure again...... but do I need to, just what benefit would I, or my computer derive from installing this software (assuming that ever becomes possible).

Have you tried going direct to the page: http://get2.adobe.com/flashplayer/
problem you describe has happened to me a few times in past, if a reboot didn't solve it I just uninstalled flash & installed latest version to fix
One for Internet Explorer. To download it, visit http://www.adobe.com with IE.
A different one for Firefox (and I think also some other browsers such as Opera). To download this one, visit http://www.adobe.com with Firefox (or Opera, etc).
The one which is built into Google Chrome. You don't have to do anything to get this, other than install Chrome.
The first two will show up as two separate items in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs if they're both installed. The third one won't because it's not a separate item.
Maybe something is calling for Flash in one browser and you're installing Flash for the other browser so the first one is never satisfied? Just an idea.
For Internet Explorer:

For Firefox/Opera:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/install_flash_player_11_plugin.msi
Chrome has it's own version integrated. If you only use Chrome then you can just go into control panel and remove any existing installations of Flash Player.
