Those were the two which immediately sprang to mind for me.

Actually,Jeanette Goldstein as Vazquez in Aliens would be great in a fight with Ripley. And Geena Davis was awesome in the Last Kiss Goodnight.

Of course for other tough guys, you've got to mention John McClane in the Die Hard series. And one of my favourites from years past...Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken in Escape From New York. One of my favourite lines ever is ...

    "I don't give a **** about your war.Or your President".

And then he went on to screw over the Prez in the last scene of the film.Brilliant stuff!

Also awesomely tough, but also cerebral and emotional,Rutger Hauer's amazing performance in Blade Runner.I still cringe when I think about him breaking Deckard's fingers!

Yeah, all of those. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction either. ' And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!' The guy's just awesome in that scene.:D

Marv, as portrayed by Mickey Rourke in Sin City. Takes a heck of a lot of punishment.

    And I'd also select Ripley.

For a woman, it has to be Ripley from Aliens.

For men, there's too many to mention!

To add to the list of men already mentioned above, I would suggest :

Riddick "I'll kill you with my tea-cup."

and as he had a lot of wounded-person-type-charisma, Michael Biehn "Come with me if you want to live" in Terminator.

Sigourney Weaver - Ellen Ripley is a no-brainer.

As for male, man thats a tough one.

Bruce Willis - John McLaine would be my choice but not since the train wreck of the latest Die Hard film, not so much.

Arnie as the Terminator was ultimate badass, Vin Diesels Riddick is another badass character, Arnie also as Conan and Dutch (Predator) are contenders.

I'm going with Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, he was just plain badass in that film!

Isn't it cheating to list robots and machines?

I'd say Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear.

Gina Carano by a massive mile. All the others are actors and she's a real MMA fighter. She was very good in Haywire.

This is cheating a bit, but i'd say Jack Bauer. The amount he puts up with in 24 hours is amazing :)

    Robert De Niro (Deerhunter)

There's loads more, but the above actors always seem to have strong or tough character roles.
