You're Next looks like the shot in the arm the horror genre needs

This new release looks amazing! 'You're Next' is the latest in the line of "home invasion" thrillers such as 'Funny Games,' and 'The Strangers.' It's been getting favourable reviews amongst critics on both sides of the pond and looks set to revitalise the horror genre with a well judged balance of humour and a barrel load of suspenseful sequences. The 'Scream' franchise is synonymous with self referential, meta narratives seeking to comment on the genre. Ironically, that has probably now become slightly stale as the future now appears to be on going back to good old fashioned scares to engage modern audiences. 'You're Next' is released here in ten days...will you be catching it?:)

The trailer looks generic as hell, but having read about the making of it and seen the festival reactions, it sounds like the trailer isn't actually very representative of the overall film, so i'm definitely going to give it a chance based on what i've read. I can't see it setting the box office on fire in the same way that Scream did though, i think it'll end up flopping but carving out a cult audience over time.

The Horror genre has done fine this year: Evil Dead, The Purge, Texas Chainsaw and The Conjuring.

This film looks ok but i would love for them to have powers and freak out the family, that would be a great 'home invasion' film.

The Purge is in no way a horror movie

I wasn't aware the Horror Industry needed a shot in the arm.

Personally I don't watch many horror films, but whenever I'm looking at the new releases on the TV to rent it seems that half or more of all films available are horror films. So it seems to be in good health.

Some weeks its impossible to find any new release that doesn't involve people breaking down and getting stranded in the woods. :D

Its probably fairer to say we are being told it looks loke its the shot in the arm etc...

Trailer did mot impress me, and I am wary of anu such vague reports from festivals and advance screenings.

Official reviews are usually embargoed until nearer release time, and these advance mutterings are usually droven by the publicity team anyway.

You're absolutely right. It could have been a brilliant horror but took the thriller route.

saw this at frightfest last night it is brilliant. funny, scary, doesn't really go where you think it will..

like cabin in the woods i think the people who will enjoy it the most are those who know lots about the genre.

And then turned off at the end on to "utter shite" avenue ;)

Have seen the trailer and think it looks a bit too similar to the premise of 'The Strangers' in places, which I liked.
I think I'll give 'You're Next' a try but I'm not expecting too much from it if I'm honest.

As to whether it is a shot in the arm, I'd have said given it is following a 'home invasion' theme, which has been done before, the OP is being very generous!:D

Agreed, if the OP hadn't posted so much before starting this thread, I'd have thought they worked for Lionsgate. It read almost like a press release...

Loved Cabin in the Woods- a brilliant idea executed with flair, imagination and sophistication.

I can assure you that isn't my job title, although it does sound like quite a nice position to have!:)

It looks crap and unconvincing. People wearing animal masks jumping out from behind doors, oooh scary. Not.

Caught it last Wednesday. I was quite impressed with what I saw. It's a film without any pretensions and doesn't set out to be anything else than it is. It delivers straight-up scares and thrills for the audience and never lets up on the gore factor. The central heroine is typically ballsy, resilient and proactive and is played with gusto by Home and Away veteran Sharni Vinson. There are a number of very suspenseful set pieces with the film's score really accentuating the visceral horror of the characters' plight. Maybe my original assertion that it was gonna really turn the genre on its head was misjudged but it is a very worthy and entertaining horror nonetheless.

Saw this at the weekend, I love horrors and its related genre's so it takes a lot to make me jump these days, but this certainly gave me a good few jumps in my cinema seat.

Fairly solid film and plenty of gore-porn, plus it was nice to see an 18 rated horror in the cinema, hopefully more will follow.

Just seen this tonight. I found it entertaining and it made me jump. I was also scared to watch at times.

However I'm afraid I more or less guessed the "twists" and so didn't find it as fresh or exciting as had been suggested. I was really hoping for it to surprise me but it didn't really. The very end was a scene I was expecting to see.

But overall I found it ok, just not the revelation/twist/freshness I expected. Whereas, for example, Cabin In The Woods was a bit of a genre shifter/play on the horror film which genuinely surprised me (I watched it not having even read a thing - I was expecting a straight up horror).

I agree, it didn't have the subversive nature that Cabin in the Wood had. Enjoyable nonetheless though...
