Heavy Rock Band Sales

Probably not the most interesting thread for some, but here goes.

Does anyone thing the huge success Metallica have had will ever been reproduced by another heavy rock band.

I just can't see it myself, bands like Slipknot, System of a Down, Korn, Deftones although huge within the metal world they have never had the crossover success of Metallica.

In the past bands like Black Sabbath, KIss, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Def Leppard have all enjoyed huge success but nowadays it seems harder for bands to make it on to mainstream radio, is this because of the digital age where this music have their own stations and doesnt get the exposure it once did, or is it just not as good as it was?

I go to Heavy Rock gigs and the money is now in live shows not record sales if thats what you are asking.

You will find bands like iron maiden will fill out twickenham and festivals and still crossover to a very mixed audeince.

Music has beocme much more compartmentalised with specialist staions for most genres years ago people would listen to tommy vance on radio ones friday night rock show, nothing like it is now on mainstream radio.

So heavy rock band live sales are still there but like all other genres there is not so much in record sales.:)

Heavy rock may not be as popular here is it once was but it's a different story in Europe. Metal in all it's forms is huge in western & central europe & the nordic countries.

relly electra? i didnt realise it was still as popular there, although they do seem to have a lot more festivals than us, so probably should have guessed it.

Why is it more popular there than here then, is it the media here that forcefeed the masses with there latest fodder that keeps metal down?

I really don't know but the continent is alive with metal bands, not just the 'dinosaurs' that were big in the 70s & 80s. There seem to be more & more sub genres appearing all the time. Yes, they do have more festivals - look at the lineup for this year's Wacken http://www.wacken.com/en/woa2013/main-bands/billing-2013/ & Graspop http://www.graspop.be/en/poster

None of these bands get any airplay over here, do they?

god forbid radio one would play any of those, kerrang seems to have something to do with the downfall here to me, not sure if anyone agrees.
They jump on the latest good looking so called 'punk/rock/metal' band almost like smash hits did with heart throbs years ago.
You have to seek out music, and me being the only one of my friends into this music it gets quite difficult, luckily my lad and his mates are into it and play stuff i haven't heard before, that was how i discovered Evile and Five Finger Death Punch

Sounds similar to me. My daughter's into it, which is why I'm now into nordic bands such as Sabaton & Korpiklaani :D

I looked at a copy of Kerrang a few weeks ago & it just seemed to be full of stuff already in or near the mainstream. As for the metalcore pretty boys, such as Black Veil Brides.......the least said the better.

Metal bands will usually these days play a selection of venues for instance i am going to see Micheal Schenker next month in a 1,200 venue,he is also playing 4,000 seater venues on the current tour.

I think this is the problem, certainly in the UK. Whereas in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, hard rock was often played on daytime Radio 1 that simply doesn't happen now. Mainstream media in the UK is now incredibly conservative and "middle-of-the-road".

I go and see bands as often as I can, I'm going to see Halestorm in Cardiff on Sunday, and I find most gigs I go to are pretty full, if not sold out. so to say there is no demand for rock music in this country isn't true and yet as a genre it is still ignored.

    Interesting one, they are.

There albums will always sell pretty well, because they have a extremely strong hardcore group of fans - although in there heyday their albums sold 20 million.

It's always noticable that even now 20+ years after the grunge breakout of which they were a major part, they still sellout massive venues and headline festivals all over the world - inc Leeds/Reading and Isle of White despict never seemingly being that popular in the UK.

Kudos to them though, they are a true fan band.

I wouldn't call Manchester Academy intimate exactly, but I know what you mean it's quite a small venue for Megadeth.

Fall Out Boy played the Camden Underworld last week, now that's intimate!

Radio 1 still play some metal occasionally. I know Bring Me The Horizon and Mastadon have been on recently.

More gigs in peoples' houses or small pubs is the way forward (obviously mot for bands like Metallica...etc).

Booked up for Donnington. 3 days of Metal/rock and no need to worry that Beyonce or Justin Bieba are going to ruin the whole thing
