Started this one because I think we might have a bit more general consensus on the best stories but we'll see......

Best:

1) The Web Of Fear
2) The Abominable Snowmen
3) The Tomb Of The Cybermen
4) The Power Of The Daleks
5) The Evil Of The Daleks

(An honourable mention to The War Games which is just outside!)

Worst:

1) The Underwater Menace
2) The Space Pirates
3) The Macra Terror
4) The Dominators
5) The Krotons

It's a bit late now and anyway it's not like the forum is a hive of activity at the moment.

This is very difficult, having to rely on the soudnstrack CDs ... most of which I have only heard once!

    In no spaffic order:

    WORST:
    Evil of the Daleks
    The Highlanders
    The Dominators
    The Abominable Snowmen
    The Space Pirates

I hated Evil. It's like a virgin's knickers: on and on and on. It never ends. Jamie and a Mute Ethnic wander round some corridors for bloody hours, with blades falling from ceilings and trapdoors opening beneath them. Rubbish. It's "capture/escape/capture/escape" for episode after episode. I am sure people are only excited about it because they've never seen it. The 1960s stuff is fun, but a lot of the Victorian stuff drags terribly.

The Abominable Snowmen is also overlong, with lots of capture/escape stuff. When it's good, it's great, but when it's bad it just drags.

The Highlanders would be utterly forgotten if it wasn't for Jamie's first appearabnce.

    BEST:
    Power of the Daleks
    The Faceless Ones
    The War Games
    Fury from the Deep
    The Wheel in Space

The Daleks are dead scary in Power. The Faceless Ones is fascinating, and feels so nice and modern. The story's a bit far fetched (one Scouse teenager is the only person to have noticed planeloads of people disappearing), but it's got energy, unusual locations and a nice range of characters.

Just bubbling under are The Web of Fear and The Invasion. Invasion doesn't make top five because it's a smidge long.

Perhaps once everyone's done we should have a "best and worst best-and-worst threads" thread.

That would just descend into "X Producer is crap, X Doctor is rubbish" arguements, surely?
At least in this thread people aren't likely to cause a punch up about the relative merits of Peter Bryant vs Innes Lloyd ... ;)

Oh my giddy aunt, another tricky one! Here goes:

    Best:

    1) The Mind Robber (best who story ever!)
    2) The Web of Fear (tense and gripping)
    3) The War Games (a real epic)
    4) The Moonbase (incredibly creepy in places)
    5) Evil of the Daleks (the Daleks at their manipulative best)

    Worst:

    1) The Dominators (deeply, deeply dull)
    2) The Space Pirates (deeply, deeply dull and daft)
    3) The Wheel in Space (not bad, but not particularly good)
    4) The Ice Warriors (not bad, bit slow)

Again, as with Hartnell, I simply don't have a fifth 'worst'. I was pushing it at four. I love sixties Who...

When I put The Highlanders in my best I almost added - and yes Chuff I know you won't agree here! Your Highlanders dislike is well known!! I really like it though, a nice fun story, and I'm not a big fan of Jamie's at all.

Faceless Ones was considered for my favourites list but I can't forgive it for getting rid of Ben & Polly!!!

Innes Lloyd worked on some great stories but made some dubious decisions.

It's nice to have a thread on each Doctor's stories, plus it saves other Doctor's threads being hijacked! :D

Ah. Would this be a bad time to mention Peter Cushing, then?:o

I suspect the majority of people on this forum haven't seen most of these (like myself) so it might be a little more nostalgia and hearsay-driven, but here goes...

    Best (in no particular order)

    The Mind Robber
    The Invasion
    The Abominable Snowmen
    The Tomb of the Cybermen
    The Evil of the Daleks

    Worst (in no particular order)

    The Krotons
    The Dominators
    The Highlanders
    The Space Pirates
    The Faceless Ones

Perhaps the Hartnell Thread would be more appropriate! :D

"The Mind Robbers" is IMHO the best Troughton story to survive in its entirety -
especially the brief re-casting of Jamie, and how The Doctor reacts to it! :D

As for "The Space Pirates" - imagine if ALL of its episodes had survived!

Have to agree here. In contrast to the previous Story, The Seeds Of Death, it really does absolutely drag. The Doctor and crew are missing for large parts of the surviving episode 2 and listening to the audio is a great cure for sleeplessness.

However, Milo Clancey gives the story some redemption if nothing else. :)

i like this better...it makes a change from the forum being cluttered with negative, depressing thread titles...:p

thinking on my Troughton picks, very tough calls to be made!

    Top 5:
    The Invasion
    The Mind Robber
    The War Games
    The Web of Fear
    The Seeds of Death

    Bottom 5:
    The Space Pirates
    The Wheel in Space
    The Moonbase
    The Dominators
    The Krotons

Breaks my heart a little that so many episodes of the Troughton era are forever lost...:(

I feel the same way - the most unfortunate casualty of the destruction, was "The Power Of The Daleks".
Why did the debut story of a black-and-white Doctor have to be included among the many wiped episodes??

While 2/3 of Troughton's output is forever lost, so too is 1/3 of the William Hartnell era -
so sad that such historic stories as "Marco Polo" and "The Massacre" are also missing. :(
