Used to like Roger De Courcey and his Nooky Bear(aka Alan Sugar)

The best line was Snow White is pregnant - after all, not all the dwarves were dopey!

He's your favourite? Exactly how many do you know of/like?

My gripe with him is the "falling over laughing" that the puppet does, too much like The Muppets.

I like Nina Conti presently,Ray Straussman is good,Ray Alan was the best with Lord Charles though.

It's certainly a skill, but I think it's an entertainment form from a bygone age tbh.

I appreciate humour is subjective but personally I don't find ventriloquism remotely funny, especially Keith Harris & stupid Orville, as for the dummies, a bit creepy!

I always think its something that works much better in stage than on TV. TV allows you to spend too much time watching the vent's mouth as opposed to the dummy.

Having said that, I believe that one of the most successful vent acts ever was on the radio! (Before my time)

I think he is. Love most of his characters. Walter and Achmed are my favourites but Peanut and Melvin are also good.

ps you don't always need a dummy

I've always found ventriloquist dummies so terrifying I can't look at them. I don't "get" the appeal of ventriloquism, I'm afraid.

Presumably, this is Peter Brough (and Archie Andrews).

One of the biggest stars of the radio era in the early fifties.
He tried to translate the success to television, but it never came off mainly due to the fact that he was terrible at his act and people could see his lips moving even on those tiny 14 inch screens they had back then.

He does move his lips too much for comfort, I'll admit, but the routines are well scripted.

I've seen Archie Andrews. Steve Hewlett was/is his vent but he doesn't own him so he's not used all the time.

Actually had my photo taken with Archie. He was a big star in his day (with Peter Brough) and brought a lot of people to the show when they realised he was in it.

I don't quite remember Peter Brough but my first favourite was Ray Alan with Tich and Quackers and later ( when I was a bit older) Lord Charles. Ray was in a class of his own for a very long time.

As an aside, does anyone remember Ayesha Brough who was Peters daughter-in-law? She presented a music programme in the early 70's called Lift Off With Ayesha and, apart from being linked to some major musicians, was once engaged to Roy Wood of The Move.

He would paint an 'A' in his face make up during their time together.

Glad someone finally mentioned Ray Allen.

Watch him here. He is an absolute master of his craft.

Jeff Dunham is a rubbish vent and an even worse comedian.

I watched it again last night because I wanted to see the hynotism routine.

It reminded me of this guy.

Kevin Johnson. He does 'kung fu' dubbed lip movements

God, no. I have a genuine phobia of ventriloquists' dummies. They have always scared the life out of me and I can't bear looking at them.

    Horrible.
