Hi. My girlfriend recently bought me a digital camera . Unfortunately my laptop is very slow . So I wondered if perhaps anybody knew of any such devices where you could safely plug your digital camera into an iPad using a USB cable or some such . Thank you

Looks like Apple decided to update it for the Lightning connection:

£25 ????
That seems a bit steep.
Cheaper, inferior options are available from your local online auction site
Because they can...
OP - Worth also pointing out that I've been researching this myself and it would appear from feedback that some cameras don't work with it, if they require a powered USB socket to transfer photos.
Check for your particular camera type before purchase.
Cheaper options which (often) work VERY WELL are widely available! I have a £4 "camera connector" for my iPad Air and it works just perfectly! It might sometimes grumble about a "unapproved accessory" but this does not prevent it working!
Why in earth do you think I was being snobbish
Someone pointed to the £25 option and I pointed out there were far cheaper options. How you turn that into me being snobbish, I don't know.
I don't consider these 3rd party camera adapters in any noticeable way inferior!
Well I think you are reading too much into it. They are inferior because in my experience of buying 3rd party cables, they are not as well made (although they are excellent value for money), and they are not apple approved so if they cause damage to your device (like the 3rd party power supplies have) apple wouldn't honour any repair.
Just reading into it what you said. Some 3rd party products are awful rubbish but there are many makers of quality kit and shouldn't all be tarred with the same brush
This is basically an SD card with wifi functionality and appears to the camera as a regular SD card. On the iPad you connect to it's wifi via Settings, then launch the free Eye-Fi app to do the transfers. You don't need to be on a wifi network for it to work - i.e. it will transfer in the middle of a field as long as the camera and iPad are in close range. The full resolution images show up in the iPad's Photos app, and you can even shoot with live updating to the tablet. Plus, the images are recorded as usual on the SD card if you need to later transfer them to a computer.
Lightning connectors made by an approved licensed company are not much cheaper than the genuine Apple product, un-licensed leads that are cheaper, the majority will have a greater failure rate especially a few months down the line.
It's a gamble if an un-licensed lead going to fail on you, not ideal if you're out in the field or on holiday and need to backup your photo's
Some (the video connector for one) are more complex and there it is Apple or nothing! This is rubbish! A 3rd party lead is either not going to work at all or it will work just fine for years - there is no way it is just going to fail at some random time for no good reason.
The £4 ones are not certified and licensed by Apple
You do realise that the plug of a lightning lead contains IC's and its not just a straight through connection like the old 30 pin connectors. Low cost and inferior IC's fail after time, have a read of this article as it backs this up http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-lightning-cable/
Have a look here at whats actually inside the lighting connector http://www.chipworks.com/en/technical-competitive-analysis/resources/blog/inside-the-apple-lightning-cable/
The "Video Adapter Cable" even has ICs which do quite sophisticated processing in the cable - and no-one has replicated that particular one. The Camera Connector is a LOT easier to copy - and copies are pretty much 100% reliable!
I just don't believe you about ICs failing!
But do carry on doling out wads of cash to Apple if it keeps you happy!
Thats why I linked to a website that had tested a fair few and found failure after a few months to be common.
Dont think I mentioned 'doling' out wads of cash to Apple. I do have a genuine Camera Connection Kit but it's used as a MIDI connection between my Ipad and Electronic Piano.
