WinXP/IE8 getting stuck

This started yesterday and it's driving me potty. When I visit the DM website and go to some of the articles (the one about the Tory immigration poster campaign is one), loading is slow and it stops completely when it tries to load something from 'fbstatic'(?). Then IE becomes non-responsive and I have to end the process.
There are several pauses while 'blank' pages are dealt with as well.
Using Chrome, everything seems ok, but it's still a bit slow.
I don't have another PC to compare.
Avast shows nothing and neither does Malwarebytes.
I've tried disabling Java etc but nothing makes any difference.
OK, I'm ready for the 'why are you looking at the DM site' and 'why are you using IE', but it's always worked so far.
Anyone have any idea what fbstatic' is?
AFAIK, no other website is affected.

Probably time to move on and use something newer...or a better news site (needed to get that in )
There is an error on the page which may be related ...... I have not used IE for a long time, it does seem very slow and laggy.
Perhaps it is time for an upgrade.
