Annie Lennox slams 'pornographic' music videos

Says she's 'disturbed and dismayed' by the recent spate of explicit videos and says Rihanna's video for Pour It Up casts her as a '****'. I know the Eurythmics video for Sweet Dreams was pretty close to the bone in its day, but they were never like these and I'm inclined to agree with her.

She's right, of course. Sadly pop music is bereft of artistry and talent and has been on an irreversible decline for a good 15 years. It's about being a celeb, social networking, brands and a bunch of painted sluts trying to out **** each other to sell records to cretinous teenage girls who worship them. It's far more likely to get worse than better.

I've not yet clicked on the link, does it contain a large number of screen shots of the sort of sordid filth we should be outraged about?

Down with this sort of thing.

    Very true.

The talent free 'X Factor generation' that wants fame and money at any price and will prostitute themselves in any way to get it.

You never know there's usually a terrible music in porn, so there might be a demand for something else.

Didn't Lennox used to perform on stage in a bra?

She does have a point though.

As did Madonna, who still does.

    Yep. :)

It's all very well the likes of Annie Lennox and others screeching about it how disgusting and immoral today's musicians are but they were part of a generation who pushed and pushed at the boundaries with their own music, videos and dress on stage. This is part of the consequences of their own behaviour. They are hypocrites to cast blame while ignoring their own contribution.

The only way the music industry can be cleaned up is for people to stop buying the music, stop watching the videos on YouTube and turn off the radio. But people won't do it so the filth continues.

Oh dearie, dearie, dearie me. There seems to be a proliferation of middle aged female pop stars, who have willingly taken the money from an industry that has ALWAYS exploited women, now getting their BHS elasticated waists in a knot about the modern artistes that are stealing their thunder. I really think that if Lennox and O'Connor were *that* bothered about the music industry they would donate the royalties of all their music to a women's refuge and leave the industry entirely. They won't of course;)

It's not just the music industry though. It's happening everywhere. Things that were thought risqué 30 years ago are old hat now, and boundaries get pushed.

The Rihanna video is really pretty misogynistic, depicting women as objects who'll do anything for money. Annie might have danced in her bra, but I don't remember her acting the prostitute.

She is right, it's why I won't let my kids watch music TV (until the Christmas play lists come on, then it's Christmas music all day every day)

There's a bit of a difference between being sexy and mimicking hard core pornography.

The video for Love is a Stranger is mildly erotic :p

Rihanna's recent video is sleazy, soft porn. She is sitting legs akimbo, touching herself and is wearing a bra that is barely covering her tits. Add to that a group of half dressed pole dancers twerking (original) in the background.

Don't watch it if it offends you :)

You have to watch it to be able to form an opinion.

It doesn't offend me, but I do think it's verging on soft porn.

Exactly. Likewise there's a difference between having a few songs in your catalog that deal with sexuality in an adult way and shoving your arsehole in everyone's face at every opportunity.

BIB - Precisely. Once was enough, between the vid and the dire song, I couldn't manage another viewing :(

It is a bit sexy doing that but hardly pornographic. There is a difference. Rihanna is seriously pushing the boundaries, as always, and is coming across as desperate now, even though she has a fantastic body. I don't blame her for flaunting it, but bringing soft porn into a video that kids will watch? No.

But it's out there regardless of whether you watch it or not.

I never said it offended me, we've seen it all before with Rihanna, it's tiresome tbh.

I can't believe there are actually adults who still use that line. I suppose we should be grateful you didn't add 'simples' at the end.

Oh dear, now I'm sounding like my mother, but I just watched the Rhianna video and my only thought was that this bird must be desperate. She is anedoidal, vastly over-rated and I defy anyone to sing along with that dirge.

The untalented feel they have to resort to more and more risque videos in order to sell themselves. Frankly I think the pendulum is beginning to swing the other way. Bring on the melody, singers, and leave the porn for those who do it well.
