Cannot connect to shared Wireless Internet

hi my laptop is connected to a family members Virgin Media wireless internet connection and has been working fine but tonight I got a Java update download request and after I downloaded it I cannot connect to the internet. When I click 'connect to a network' it says 'windows cannot find any networks'. I did a system restore but that has not made any difference.
any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
