Ipod Touch 5th Gen not working with apple ipod dock

Hi,
I realise that the ipod has a lightning connector, but I figured if I bought an adapter that it would work with the apple ipod docking speaker . . .
But . . . . .
It doesn't . . . .
Does anyone have any ideas . . . . ?
I'm thinking the only way it'll work is an out from the headphone socket of the ipod touch into the 30 pin speaker connection . . .
Though, I'll have to charge it elsewhere . . . . . .
Is this the only way ?

It's a cheap copy, so that's perhaps the problem.
I'm going to splash the cash on an apple cable, so we'll see how it goes . .
