And here's why I think so.
I'm on the verge of stopping watching.
I said this on this page of the Neighbours discussion part of the soap forum and I'll say it here: I just don't have a favourite character(s) and I'm not really enjoying any of the storylines either.
Paul and Priya's affair - Just can't connect with it. It's been done before, so it's not really anything new. Also, Priya's attitude in every episode is practically the same: 'Oh I hate you Paul and I'm not falling for your games' etc etc. By the end of the episode, they're kissing, and I'm thinking 'Once again, she just can't "resist his charms"'. Also, Priya's not a character I like that much. I used to really like Paul, but lately he's become less villainous and I just think he's not what he used to be. (Sorry PRF!!)
Andrew's epilepsy - Andrew is just so unlikeable that I just don't care about this storyline. I just really can't stand Andrew at all.
Susan and Karl - GET THEM BACK TOGETHER ALREADY!!
Toadie and Sonya's pregnancy - Lately, Sonya's become so much more irritating to me, especially on the day she bought the giant birthing pool, and she was all 'Oh Alex the doula says it's a good idea!' I was just thinking 'SONYA, IT'S YOUR PREGNANCY, NOT ALEX THE BL**DY DOULA'S!!'
Summer and Bradley - I just can't picture these two together at all. And I just know we're going to be seeing episodes of Summer staring adoringly at Bradley, yet still maintaining a 'I do not fancy Bradley!' attitude, of course.
Callum/Rani/Harley - This storyline was ruined for me when Callum decided to go badass and dress like Harley and imitate his attitude. I was expecting Callum to either try harder (in a NORMAL approach) or just give up and resent Rani and Harley instead, but nope. Oh well.
Lucas' love for Vanessa/Vanessa's pregnancy - Again, I'm getting bored of this cyclical 'I love Vanessa but I'm not telling her' speak from Lucas. And this future storyline, well, I thought Vanessa had a stronger personality than having to resort to this, but oh well I suppose.
Chris and Aiden - My guess: Chris will find out the truth about Aiden and Andrew and end the relationship (agian )
Rhys' dodgy hand - Although I'm not a fan of Rhys, I wish that Vanessa hadn't blabbed the truth to Jessica. I wish he'd got his own way and continued to assist in surgery with a broken hand, but once again, oh well!
Now, onto characters I HAVEN'T mentioned:
Lou - I feel he doesn't really have a purpose in the show anymore. Plus he's always gallivanting off to some country for his annual six month break, and I just think instead of taking a break for half the year, why not just leave? I just think we've seen the best of Lou.
Toadie - He's too easily influenced by everyone. He needs to be more assertive.
Kyle - Now Jade's gone, and Harley's not permanent, I don't think there's anything for him in the show. He could easily sell Dial-a-Kyle and relocate.
Kate - I don't like how she does bad things (kissing a student particularly) and just gets away with it.
Sophie - She is SO annoying and bratty! She better stay in Sydney in rehab forever!
Natasha - Well, I was going to say there's nothing for her in the street now Ed's gone, but then I read this.
Ajay - I might sound contradictory, but in another sense I'm GLAD Priya and Paul are having an affair- at least it'll wipe that IRRITATING GRIN off of Ajay's face!
Rani - I'm hoping she does something bad e.g. shoplift. I think it'll develop a more interesting, unexpected side to her personality.
Harley - Firstly, he's SO annoying! Secondly, having saying that, I'm guessing by the time he leaves, he'll have the personality of a saint thanks to guidance from Kyle - another 'badass turned good' character, of course.
I hope I don't quit watching, but it looks like I'm going to have to resort to that in the forseeable future, which is a shame.
Me too
Great post especially BIR. I am glad I am not the only one that it irritates
The Kapoors are the best thing to happen to the show in ages!!!
There are no killer storylines anymore. Nothing to keep us hooked. It's just the same old dross. Didn't Rachel run off with an older teacher? How apt that Summer is going to run off with an older manager. They need to do things differently.
I wonder if it will be Vanessa's kid or Sonya's kid that will die? Home and Away is meant to be having a baby death, no doubt Neighbours will follow.
It's still good in my opinion and enjoying Paul and Priya's affair although I don't agree with adultery!
Looking forward to Vannessa's mum arriving as she seems a right battle-axe! Will be sad to see Tash leave though.
I agree with all this, Tash leaving is sad. I just hope they replace all the departing girls with some decent characters.
I would love to see Elle returning one day, now there was a brilliant character who could put her dad in his place and I would love to see how she is with Andrew, her half-brother!
Would love Neighbours to be like it used to be. The 1990s was the best decade for the soap, as it had good storylines, eg. Jim's Death, the Waterhole explosion, Cody being shot, and not to mention the theme. The greg hind one is the best. They should have that one in it these days.
Paul is still incredibly sexy though. I don't blame Priya for accidentally snogging him - I would and it wouldn't be an accident either. He needs to up the evil a notch as he's not been nasty enough for a while.
top class post/rant .... enjoyed the read loads
Paul and Priya's affair is meant to be the hot story at the moment, but it would have been far more interesting if Priya wasn't a one-dimensional bore with no reedeming qualities whatsoever.
The Lucas/Rhys/Vanessa storyline has some problems, but Vanessa and Rhys are great together. I can see Rhys throwing everything away simply because he is angry about his hand and isolates himself. Its interesting to see Rhys, such a focused person, have to learn to cope with losing the only thing he ever wanted (to be a sunrgron)and as a result losing everything else too. I love Neighbours exploration of characters in this way. I would love to see Lucas finally get Vanessa, only for Steph to turn up on his doorstep! I think Lucas falls for women far too easily and likes the idea of a relationship rather than the actual practicalities of it.
Karl and Susan - I was upset when these two split, but have loved watching these characters explore other areas of their lives and learn to cope alone. Their friendship is wonderful to watch and I dont doubt that they will get back together. I would like to think that choosing one another at this stage, rather than just getting on with an unhappy marriage, will make their relationship stronger. I think alot of women can identify with Susans need to rediscover herself and the shock of waking up one day to discover all your children have grown up and you need to redefine yourself and your purpose.
Toadie/Sonya - These two can be annoying, but it is good to finally see Toadie settled and happy.
Andrew - I actually like Andrew and always have so I guess thats why I am enjoying the epilepsy storyline. I think it goes too far maybe, but it is good as a reflection of his relationship with his father and the fear of letting Paul down in some way. Also, Tash becoming involved in keeping his secret shows different sides of their personalities and their relationship. It certainly reveals how far these characters have grown compared with when they joined and we had the whole fake pregnancy thing.
Paul/Priya - I cant help but think that Paul is only doing this to get some sort of revenge on Ajay. He set out to destroy him and is still doing this. I dont buy for a second that Paul is interested in Priya except for the idea of winning some sort of game. I am hoping the affair will reveal something about Priya because at the moment I dont really understand her motivation (except that Paul is hot!).
As I mentioned above, I also like exploring Pauls relationship with Andrew.
Kyle - Looking forward to seeing more of Shelia and hopfully some other cannings. Would love to see Kyles Mum! He needs some family to interact with.
Kate - Have been pleased that she has not featured so much lately. I really do not like Kate and Sophie and I never have.
Summer/ Bradley - I totally find these two believable. Summer is far more suited to an older man.
Chris and Aiden - Their journey has been wonderful to watch and they are so sweet. I dont know what the future holds for these two, but if the writing stays as it has I am sure it will be handled well.
The strength of Neighbours is a small cast and good character development. They dont rely on 'shocking' storylines and big life changing events. Instead we see characters develop and explore their relationships over time. There is room for some improvement, but then I think that is true for any soap. However, in my opinion it is becoming stronger.
i hope she remains that way too
I agree!
is she permanent?
