I got a notification stating my trial will expire in a matter of days. Does this mean that unless I purchase the pro edition, I can't use it anymore?

I was under the impression you could always use a free version?

No you are not forced to pay, it will just tell you that your subscription has ended (or something along that line) has ended. At some point you should get a message when opening the product asking if you want to continue with the free version or pay to get the pro edition. This took five days to appear on mine.
But I had to reinstall Windows earlier this week, and so have gained Pro edition for another month.

Yes, it just means that you lose real-time protection.

And, to be honest, the product is so good in my view that it's worth paying the one-off cost for the pro version.

When you installed it, you choose the option for 'Pro version Free Trial'. You could have clicked the 'Decline' button instead.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is free, except for real-time protection and Flash scanning.
