    Which version of iPad?

There are leads available to convert the connector on the iPad to either VGA or HDMI, though I think HDMI is only available on iPads with a Lightening connector. VGA is available in both 30 pin and Lightening connector formats.

You would also need an appropriate lead and matching connection on the TV.

Another option might be Apple TV and AirPlay. Apple TV is a small device that plugs into the TV and allows you to stream stuff from the iPad. AirPlay is an app you run on the iPad to make this happen.

I could find loads of VGA connectors (used one myself) but couldn't see any HDMI ones glancing through google. And couldn't see one on the Apple site either.

But if they are (still) available then that might be better than VGA as it's possible the OP's TV will have HDMI but not so certain it will have VGA.

Not so much an app as software built in to IOS. This makes it very easy to use from anywhere you can play a video. It's the most elegant solution, but it does cost £99.

In most electrical stores, Argos, Currys, HMV, Apple store.

Make sure you get the Apple one, the cheaper alternatives do not tend to be that good and many do not work since iOS 5/6

Or you could buy an Apple TV for £99 or on ebay for £70

Apple adapter here at Amazon for much less.

I've never understood why an HDMI socket is not built in to iPads. I have a much cheaper Tablet with all sockets for connectivity. Typical Apple I suppose, they want you to buy one.

Apple TV allows you to do it wirelessly.

That's a cheap copy, not an original one.
