Anybody else miss her as much as I do?
That girl who claimed our hearts in the 80s with her catchy uplifting pop dance tunes and sassy individual dress sense.
She who made us dance 'for inspiration'
She who became the undisputed Queen Of Pop and had hit after hit after hit
The raunchy young thing who caused a commotion with her Like A Prayer song and video
She who made a couple of funny, sassy cute films and then delivered a load of stinkers.
The girl who didn't give a shit what people thought of her and took none back.
She who fell from grace during the SEX book/Erotica era but then rose like a phoenix from the ashes to star in Evita and who won a golden globe and then went on to make her best album to date, Ray Of Light
I could go on and on
Where did this woman go?
She seems to have become a parody of herself, dressing far too young for her age and looking a dog's dinner and delivering good but forgettable albums and singles which anyone could have recorded.

Madonna is still here. You just see her differently because she's older. You said you liked how raunchy she was in the LAP video, but now that she's older you say that is wrong. She hasn't changed so much as everyone thinks.
So yeah, i dont miss it because she is still here on top and every decade she has pretty much showcased why she is who she is with quality masterstroke music and performance and artistry.....this decade is ready for another move M!
So yeah she still definitely has it! as for her look her Punk drive has always been a Madonna staple...i just love the ripple effect and action she has caused with it
For me Madonna was at her best from 1989 to 1995. I do believe this was her most creative period. Ray Of Light is a truly epic piece of work but its all about the early 90s for me.
The last decade has sort of been hit and miss. Music was such a massive seller yet I don't really think the album had an identity and it sold so much off the back of Ray Of Light being so huge. American Life I think is the best thing she has released these past ten years. Confessions is a great album but MDNA and Hard Candy in particular have been her weakest collections imho. So I can see why fans long for the days of old.
I really hope we get something good for album 13. I want it to be more Erotica than Hard Candy and more Confessions than MDNA. There are moments on MDNA like Love Spent and Beautiful Killer that prove she still has classic Madonna still within her. But then the likes of Girl Gone Wild and Turn Up The Radio let the side down. Coincidently, and regardless of what might be claimed, she didn't even write the last two songs which might be why it felt wrong.
She's still got a lot more about her than many of the young artists sprouting up nowadays but she's in a much different place now than she was in the 80's. If you think she's better now or at the same level she was in the 80's then that's fine. Personally, I think her family is her priority now whereas in the 80's it was her career and her work back then was better IMO and she led the way. Now, she's by far still the best touring artist but her music lacks the magic of the 80's
She sprinkled her magic on many MDNA tracks but she didn't write many if any. Some Girls was an Orbit song intended for Britney, Falling Free was written by Laurie Mayer in the most part, Gang Bang had many people writing and producing. I love Like A Prayer and ROL because you can tell she had a heck of a lot of input in the songs and they are very personal, I didn't get that feeling with MDNA
The last decent song she released was Deeper and Deeper back in 1992.
Lets dissect it....her first trio of albums set up up as a Pop Icon/Figure to rival MJ and Prince across the decade....hit after hit after hit for 5 years straight.
Like a Prayer launched Madonna as the legendary figure we know to day...the music acclaim, the eprformances, the visuals, the sheer damn scope....its what we know her as....which continued across the BA Tour/Erotica/girlie show period of time....Again much like the 80s the only dip in both aspects was her film ventures (Evita and Susan aside) but at the end of the 90s we were showcased that Madonna very much could shake it up...and push forward new dynamics which re-iterated her power into the new millenuim...and that spark has still continued to burn to this day.
MDNA proved that while it is her lowest seller and the reception was very mixed, her name and legacy can sell new material....much like Bowie this year proved....and the fact the material is solid spoke volumes too...the tour also showcased as a performer she can dare to push new territory....just MDNA the album itself didnt necessarily....but its definitely there...and whenever she wants to shake it up musically she knows she can do it as we all do know
I dont with any artist say "oh i wish it was 80s, 90s, 00s" whatever....because everything is about moving forward...and with Madonna with each three decade there are two masterpiece albums in each decade (at least) some defining moments in culture in different fragments of each decade.....and to this day she can do anything and be front page news/page spread for whatever reason and man how i lvoe that
In your opinion
As in overview she has released a plethora of "decent" songs ...in fact on the whole there has been a majority of acclaimed work across the rest of the 90s decade and into the 00s....as ever with Madonna...she caters for many tastes
Aside from the tour the MDNA era was pretty much a non entity. Little to no promotion, no memorable performances on TV or massive magazine spreads. No hit singles and it felt as though the music was just promotion for the tour. MDNA isn't bad and has some real highs such as Beautiful Killer but it's not a patch on her 80's stuff
In so many areas MDNA wasnt designed to rival her best albums which in so many ways is not "just the 80s stuff" it is indeed beyond that. MDNA was going to be something different but instead i think the eclect style and range of styles....each 16 songs are very different to one another was just created for fans and therefore the need for promotion was not required...it has to be her most non traditional format for an album to date...whereas the world tour showcased what could have been on the album instead had more time been put into it...but alas as an album it was good....but forget "80s stuff" to comapre to EACH of her masterpeice albums you have to look at all three decades as a whole...and MDNA is the leader of the latter third ( in terms of ranking/rating) of enjoyability for me (edging past True Blue, Bedtime Stories and Hard Candy IMO) because it did have variation, it did have a lot of demons exorcised which was interesting to hear and see and it set a lot of groundwork for her to take off for album 13 on
Now it's 2013 and she's a pale imitator of every other trashy pop star of 2013, except twice as old.
The thread's about classic old school Madonna and how she captured our hearts in the 80's and how she is now compared to then hence my comparisons with the 80's albums. If we are comparing MDNA to her 90's stuff then it beats Erotica for me but falls short of BS and ROL and if we compare it to her 00's stuff then it falls short of everything bar Hard Candy IMO. The only true redeeming thing about this era is the absolutely fantastic tour. After two mediocre (by her exceptionally high standards) albums, she needs to pull out all the stops next time and deliver or else the criticisms will persist
However it always seemed to have been huge songs here not big in the USA eg Into The Groove and vice versa.
Into The Groove is probably one of the greatest pop/dance songs ever made in my opinion
I think she won the Americans over again with the Superbowl:) Her tour did remarkably well over there on the back of that performance and she gained many fans. While over here, we had no promotion and plenty of people didn't even know she had an album out. They heard a poor song (GMAYL) on the radio and that didn't inspire them to buy the record hence the poor sales. It could be a different story next time though and if she promotes well and has quality music to put out then she will come good again, she has a really big UK fan base
I think Madonna will be back in favour over here again soon though. When she became a ''Brit'' (1997 to 2008) our media loved her. The turn only seems to have happened since she moved back to the States. Maybe they felt betrayed lol
What an absurd post
Madonna was always a trendsetter....how come these guys were also popular when Madonna had lead the way prior to it being a "trend" in the mainstream? riddle me that
Madonna and Cyndi were only compared due to their absurd fashion styles catching on into public consciousness, musically they were very different...Cyndi did covers of songs and sang renditions of stuff written for her whereas Madonna broke out with her band and made Dance music become a Pop staple....and Madonna continued to evolve and bring social issues into her work when her contemporaries in Pop music didnt risk it (only really Prince did) No one else did what Madonna did when she released her material....it was most likely...using examples there, very underground or just becoming its own trend. Which was the point. And every Madonna album contains her own stamp anyhow.
The only time where she caught onto a mainstream sound/direction was Bedtime Stories for half of it is mainstream R&B and Trip hop elements which were new at the time...Hard Candy with Timbaland/harell/Kanye who were in the mainstream peak them themselves. Every other release was very much against trend and ahead of the game....and we very much are ready for her to shake it up.
In response to 2013 Madonna....no one in Pop music has madean album like MDNA anyway....bar her singles nothing on the album had a "commercial" feel to it....very different.
Interesting perception...and i do think there is something there....Celebration was snubbed by Radio 1...the year after she left for the US, and of course she kept low profile until late 2011 which meant other trends were catching on and stuff...and MDNA had minimal airplay anyway but also with zero back up.
So what would be required is something really bold, something striking to really showcase MADONNA and push forward new ideas and trends again And by the sounds of things i think she is ready to do so again too. I mean she is coming back to the UK next week for the Chime FOr Change which will be interesting to see anyway and hopefully she will adapt and infuse promo techniques for when album 13 is ready She still has it in her
In the UK Madonna and Cyndi Lauper first came to the public's attention literally the same week. According to the Guiness book of British hit singles Madonna's first single 'Holiday' and Cyndi Lauper's first single 'Girls just want....' both entered the chart the exact same date (14th January '84)..
In the 80s alone Madonna had 21 UK Top 10 hits. The only single she released in the 80s that wasn't a UK top 10 hit was 'Lucky Star'. 6 of those were No.1 hits. She had 7 No.1 hits in the USA.
Cyndi Lauper had 3 UK Top 10 hits in the 80s, none got to No.1, she had 2 US No.1s.
If she's going to out sell someone by so much then I think there's got to be more to her than just copying someone's style just to hit the big time.
I don't see that Madonna had much in common with Cyndi Lauper musically and copied her that way. Cyndi always leaned more towards a pop/rock sound and Madonna was more dance. Maybe you mean from their outrageous fashion sense? But then everyone even male singers had that type of outrageous look because it was the 80's. Cyndi and Madonna both lived in NYC in the early 80's so naturally had some of the same fashion thrift store influences. It doesn't Madonna was copying Cyndi.
Madonna has never had much in common with the female singer/songwriters of the 90's such as Fiona Apple and Tori Amos.
