Last Friday the instrument panel died on my 02 reg 1.4 focus. The car drives ok and warning lights on panel still work Just none of the dials register or the electronic odometer work. Anyway drove the car to the shops and back no problems. When I got home started the car again after about 5mins and speedo and everything working again. Went to try it again today and dead speedo again.
Any ideas? I've heard it could be a speed sensor problem or the fault with the speedo as mentioned on Watchdog. Thanks

You could have a look at these guys...http://bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=FORD_FOCUS_DASHBOARD_INSTRUMENT_CLUSTER
here's a long thread on the problem

I don't know if the deal still exists or if it ever applied to 2002 models, and maybe Ford would argue that on a 2002 car the fault has arisen simply because of wear and tear. If your Ford dealer isn't helpful, try giving Ford Customer Services a call. See:

Edit ... Snap.
Some links there as well
The instrument panel has it's own test facility.
Although the following link is for a USA Ford the test works on my 2001 UK (German) Ford Focus

If this works it is unlikely to be the instrument panel
The speedo going to zero, the odometer to 4 dashes and the car running a little rough is often a sign of the speed sensor failing. In the past few months my speedo does the same. I take my foot off the accelerator and then full on the accellerator again for a fraction of a second and the display comes back.
Check the internet search engines for Ford Focus VSS failure. Example: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=15028&m=152683
