Mobo awards are no longer for true black musicians ? Thoughts?

I just don't think the Mobo awards are really celebrating true black culture music, it seems to be a watered down awards show from what it used to be. Commercial music seems to have won. However Emeli Sande truly deserved her awards, I think they are trying to hard to make the mobo awards appeal to the masses.

Has it ever? It stands for Music of Black Origin doesn't it?

Surely Emeli Sande is black as well, so don't get why you mention her.

it's music of black origin not people of black origin who make music. It could encompass almost anything really and iv'e always thought it a pretty meaningless concept.

I have often thought if we had an awards ceremony for music of white origin there would be a huge discrimination cry!

But guess that would be difficult as hasn't all music got it's roots from black music (even loosely) from the time of slaves singing about freedom

it's never been awards for true black musicians, or even just black musicians or non white musicians, it's music of black origin. but this year it seems to be music of cowel origin, but they've not renamed it the MOCO's

Cowell buys out everything - the man is a cancer to the industry. Thankfully now, people are wising up to him.

I'm completely against catagorising music by colour in any way shape or form. I think it's wrong on a number of different levels, and goes against what music is about at its core. They shouldn't exist.

We do. It's called the Country Music Awards. Why is it that people always want to call the MOBOs or BET awards racist, but no one says anything about the ALMAs or Latin Music Awards. Surely, those have to be categorized as racist too. Especially the ALMAs since you can't win or be nominated unless you are Latino. Anyone can win a MOBO or BET award. While we are at it, let's just call the AMAs and EMAs nationalist because they are.

Co-sign!! People always have hidden agendas that come out when the MOBO awards start. Funny how no other specialised award ceremony gets attacked so viciously.

Country music has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour.

The MOBOs are basically the "Nu R'n'B" awards, but without those caucasian groups/bands,which are catered for with the likes of the NME,Kerrrang & Q awards.

Maybe not, but it is music of white origin or music made mostly by white people. It would be no different if they were to change the name of MOBOs to the RnB awards or RnB and Hip-Hop awards if semantics is all that you are upset about.

I can name Darrius Rucker and the black kid from X Factor. I can name you a lot more white people who make black inspired music and are awarded MOBOs and BET awards.

Neither does R&B or any of the music celebrated at the MOBOs, yet people still find time to attack that. To be honest, how many black country singers do you actually know? Then compare that to how many white singers you see singing music of 'black origin' and your argument doesn't really stand up. It may have nothing to do with skin colour, but the artists popular in country music are almost certainly far less varied than the artists celebrated at the MOBOs, which makes all of this seem very ridiculous.

I can only name those two, though. Country music still is "white" music just like soul music and Gospel are "black" music. It doesn't matter who sings it and that is why the MOBOs are the way they are.

NME, Kerrang!, etc. have NOTHING to do with urban music. They hate it with a passion. They only do guitars.

Truth is, there's practically no mainstream artists that do PROPER "black" music anymore, and the ones that do, it's not those songs they get their hits with.

It's basically now for anybody that has R&B/hip hop influences in a lot of their songs. Which means people like Conor Maynard, Jessie J, Amy Winehouse, Alex Clare, etc. qualify.

If it was for proper R&B/hip hop music, then people like Usher, Tinie Tempah, Rihanna, etc. would not be eligible, because they don't do that style of music. They're just as pop as Jessie J, etc. now.

For me it's a simple point that most of the Black or coloured artisit at the awards make music steeped in other genres that have no basis or origin in that of black culture and music. unless they are truly celebrating Black music then they'd be better served looking outside the top 40 or just chnaging the name to Music of some or very little Black origin to appeal to a mass mainstream audience.

Kerrang! maybe, but the NME have awarded the likes of Dizzie Rascal and Professor Green in recent times.

I'd like to see the MOBOs either scrapped altogether or rebranded as the Urban Music Awards. At the time of their inception even the Brit awards typically ignored urban music, so there was a strong argument for a separate award show (like the longstanding Soul Train awards). Things have moved on since then, thankfully.

The point is - music is colourless. So there shouldn't be a music award show which is based on colour.
