I don't see how they can shorten the Saturday show, apart from cutting down the ad breaks (and losing the flash vote, of course)
...a desperate Cowell is said to be considering several ideas, including shortening the length of the Saturday-night show, following some complaints that it is too long.

maybe they could cut out the singing as it seems a lot of people don't actually base their favouritism on how an act performs anyway
The show needs stability; however really the damage to the show was done when acts like Rylan were kept in and the show become so obviously manipulated. Yes there had always been an element of it, however the long term affect of Producers getting media hungry is now becoming more evident.
Viewers want something fun and unserious - the success of SCD is because the show is light entertainment and isn't life or death like TXF is portrayed. Same with the success of TGBBO - its a light show that's easily accessible and very easy to enjoy. The drama comes from the mundane things whilst TXF comes across as forced and overhyped so much.
Really I think the show is in a decline and nothing is really going to halt it as the damage was done long ago
Time to let go Simon and give it a decent burial.
Or put it into cold storage and revive it when people realise they miss it
If he lets go now there may just be enough love for the show remaining for it return a few years down the line. If it's continuously flogged then it'll be buried never to return.
I think, if Simon can return, they'll try one more series and then lay it to rest if it doesn't at least stabilise.
I'm not sue they will.
The show is very much the product of the first decade of the 21st Century - things have moved on ...
yep
for me its moved too far away from a show about music and taken on too many elements of reality TV
Really? With 12 acts their songs take up about 35 minutes - the rest of the show is filler and crap
I agree with these suggestions. If the sunday show needs to be an hour long, they should cut out some of the chats with the judges, shorten dermots links (which seem to have gotten longer and more about massaging the judges egos, or trying to make him seem funny and the centre of attention), less recaps of the previous night and give the judges more time to critique the sing off performances. In the Australian show, each judge gets a few minutes to tell the acts what they thought of each of their performances and then say who they are sending home. It is much better as the judges actually get to do their job and show their knowledge and both acts get advice on what to improve for the next performance, whether it happens on the show or the real world.
They should make the vts on saturday more like how they were up to and including series 6. Back then they were more natural, focused on rehearsals, and you got to see the contestants personality. For the past few years they seem like something out of towie, with contrived set up situations eg showing sam getting out of bed at 6 am, showing him singing in his bedroom from outside the house, bringing up the fact he doesn't have a girlfriend and does crazy things for charity to get girly votes, or tameras vt showing how lovely she is as she loves her family (who doesn't:rolleyes:). The vts also focus too much on trying to make out the judges are the acts friends, showing them shopping with them, having cosy personal chats which makes it more about the judges that the contestants. I would rather see them helping them improve their performance, even though it is nice to think they are friends, it isn't an essential part of the show, as long as the mentor guides them and helps them become the best performer they can be, they have done their job so we don't need to know they're friends.
Agree with these posts too. Everyone says series 7 is one of the best series but for me that is when the decline started, that was the first year I felt uncomfortable watching sometimes (I still did though). Series 8 is the only series since then I have gotten properly into the show and that was more down to kelly and little mix rather than the quality of the show in general.
The X Factor series 7 was very much like Big Brother series 7 - twists, over the top contestants and controversial decisions were thrown at the show to make it bigger than ever but at the detriment of the programme as a whole.
Strangely, unlike Big Brother 8 which suffered badly from the off partly due to the racism scandal of the intervening Celebrity Big Brother, The X Factor's eighth series started off well but went into decline when they decided to ridicule the final auditionee, go all TOWIE on the bootcamp edit and had a horrendous twist on the first live show.
I think it is staring down the barrel of a gun now. I'm just wondering who might pull the trigger - ITV? Simon?
Make as any tweaks as you want, at the end of the day it is still people singing covers on TV. The whole singing contest format is just dying - it's had its day and the best years are very much behind it. ITV should be looking for the next big ratings winner and it shouldn't involved contestants in front of judges.

But everyone is looking for the next big ratings winner in light entertainment. No one can put their finger on it, though, therefore current (or past) hits are being extended, flogged or both.
This. Completely agree with you.
When you sit down and watch the Saturday show, it feels like you've been sitting there for hours and hours and hours. It gets so boring.
If Simon wants to improve the show, he needs to make the shows shorter and much sharper.
I don't think it helps that it follows Strictly; a lot of light entertainment fans watch that, which is almost two hours in length, and then switch to The X Factor. It's too much.
Not that it harmed the show when it was at it's peak but now it needs all the help it can get four hours of light entertainment is far too much.
Wouldn't matter ratings would still drop. Absolutely nothing to do with Melanie not getting picked for the 1000 time
AUDITION 1: 9.99m
AUDITION 2: 10.41m
AUDITION 3: 9.24m
AUDITION 4: 10.27m
AUDITION 5: 9.77m
AUDITION 6: 10.20m
AUDITION 7: 9.67m
AUDITION 8: 10.61m
BOOTCAMP 1: 8.96m
BOOTCAMP 2: 10.50m
JUDGES HOUSES 1: 9.60m
JUDGES HOUSES 2: 9.13m
LIVE SHOW 1: 9.02m
LIVE SHOW 1 RESULTS: 10.07m
All these people saying X Factor is flopping look at those ratings. Name me another show at the weekend that could that on a saturday night for ITV
Why are you bringing up Melanie, there are four judges and they had their own categories. Do you think Sharon for example picked the best acts from boot camp and JH's or Louis, I don't.
I dont think Gary picked the best groups either and one of the girl group is preggers ffs. Do you not think mistakes were made all round.
Forget Melanie she is gone, look at the other acts that were not chosen and why oh why was Abbie chosen.
