I also enjoy the music of Ennio Morricone. He is more famous for his film scores of course but would any of you consider these pieces modern classical music?
Schubert - Piano Sonata in A Major, especially the second movement is one of my favourite pieces of music. It's tragic he died so young. I think he knew he was dying when he wrote this - it sounds like it anyway! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il6-lZYDpqY
I love more minimalist composers like Satie and Arvo Part too. The Gymnopedies are all amazing but I think everyone overlooks Satie's nocturnes. I also think he's pretty unfairly judged as a not-so serious composer due to his eccentricity and slight compositions. The 2nd and 4th of his nocturnes are my favourites.

i've only recently started listening to classical music in the last year or so so i'm still trying to wrap my head around it but I can see it becoming an obsession tbh.

Yes I love Profokiev.
He had so many different styles as well. Many of his famous pieces sound like they could have been written by completely different composers.
I like Wagner too.
I also like a piece of music called Time Forward by Georgy Sviridov.
My favourite composer though if I had to pick one would be Ennio Morricone. I could just listen to his music until the end of time and never tire of it.
Other film composers I rate highly are Roy Budd, John Barry, and John Murphy.
Comments
I have two:
Holst - The Planet Suite
Greig - Peer Gynt
Thanks.:-)At the moment I am listening to lots of classical music and was interested in peoples particular choices.
So far for me Pucchini and Vivaldi are wonderful. Both Italian I find their music softer and more soothing.
I do tend to like more modern composers, though. Michael Nyman is probably my favourite living composer.
Interesting you never really think of modern where composers are concerned except in filmmaking.
Prokofiev - Troika/Romance (from Lieutenant Kije Suite, Op. 60):

Arvo Part's Spiegel im Spiegel is probably the most calming thing i've ever heard. Love it with the cello.

and speaking of cello, i've recently started listening to Leos Janacek's suite for strings and this part is amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx1PBU3BuK8
and Debussy's nocturne! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyZJ3rNb4xM
