Modem Routers

I lost connection to the Internet the other day and after I did all the usual checks with the connections, micro filter and checking if my ISP had any reported outages, I diagnosed a faulty modem/router (Netgear N300).
As I had the N300 for a about 3 years I was wondering if this is the normal life expectancy of a modem/router?
I've now bought a Netgear N600 and I hope this one will last a bit longer.
So what the life expectancy of a modem/router? Would leaving it powered up at all times extend it's life? Up until now i'd been powering off after every online session as I though that would be more secure.

3 years isn't too bad for a router that probably was fairly cheap.
Thanks to you all for your responses.
