Just seen the first episode the rock one. I liked it but I am always a sucker for people talking music they love. I even enjoyed the Jo Whiley tv show.
I agreed about the concept of being loyal to a band. I even bought the third Echobelly album.
One quibble was how badly edited it was. Some of the sentences where cut of in mid-flow. It was that bad even I noticed it.
Enjoyed these. There was a review in the Guardian moaning about the lack of a 'showdown' and not enough arguments etc but I found it very refreshing. Thought Danny Baker had it spot on with his attitude. You can't try and preach and deny something that someone else loves.
Credit to Clarkson. He's a true fan. He was almost a gibbering wreck when Mick Fleetwood appeared on Top Gear last week!
Rumours and DSOTM are perfect if completely predictable. Thought the young woman's Rock choices were trying to be a bit too clever? Or maybe she just loves them. Lovely 13th choice by Baker too.
I just had a little look at a well-known internet music seller. Supertramp's Crime of the Century is at No. 52 in the bestsellers! It's spent 3 days in the top 100. I wonder why?(!)..... Other Supertramp albums are nowhere near that. The power of TV........
I've read before that bands have a spike in sales after exposure on BBC4 theme nights etc. Logical (Song), really........
Does anyone have a link to the final album walls for all 3 programmes? I've seen the list on this forum for the rock programme but can't find the other 2.
Watched 5 minutes of last night's show, but switched off because of Trevor Nelson wittering on about what is and what isn't R&B. Who the f cares? Just enjoy the music and stop trying to categorise it all.
I didn't see last night's show but agree with The Gatherer regarding categorising the music. I mean, to me "Rumours" can just as easily be a rock as a pop album, same with Supertramp, Kate Bush, ELO and Blondie. It didn't make much sense having two separate programmes unless you were going to be really hardline on what was "rock" and stick to artists who never wavered from that genre.
another great show last night, I could watch these all day long - I demand more!!!
And I did agree with most of the top 13 this time around. Aretha, Curtis Mayfield and most importantly Ol' Millie, who was finally in a poll that didn't involve THAT record sleeve. God bless Millie Jackson:D

Felt unbelievably happy that the other MJ was chosen. Thought that it was only me and my g/fs who appreciated Millie. Got to love a good concept album
Shame that so little comment on here. For me the best of the 3 genres and I love all the choices but then I'm an ol' soul gal
Just watched the second episode on iPlayer and wondered why it has taken so long to create a programme such as this. A sheer joy from start to finish as far as I'm concerned.
My three?
Parallel Lines has to be in there in terms of pure pop and is probably the obvious winner.
The Beatles? Should be in there in theory, but some of their album content was far too edgy - good. Sorry for the purists, but in pop terms it has to be Band On The Run.
Where do we go from there?
I'd vote for Hypnotised by The Undertones.
I'd love to see The Buzzcocks in there somewhere, but I think it would have to be a greatest hits album, which seems to be cheating.
This World And Body by Marion is full of brilliant songs, but too left field.
It's absolutely impossible. In album terms I really can't do it, but for a third, I'd go for Super Extra Gravity by The Cardigans. Sheer genius and full of wonderfully melodic songs.
It really can't be done. You could nominate The Beatles No. 1 (which would eclipse anything if it counted), but this is something that nobody will ever agree on. I couldn't listen to even a minute of Michael Jackson, so that obviously relegates me to the basement.
An excellent mini-series. I thought the third one was the weakest but that's only because R&B isn't my taste so I hadn't heard of many of the acts mentioned - but it has given me some suggestions for albums to try.
Bill Withers Live @ Carnegie Hall
Stevie Wonder - Music of My Mind
Millie Jackson - Still Caught Up
Stevie Wonder- Songs in the Key of Life
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Marvin Gaye- What's Going On
Barry White - Stone Gon'
Prince - Sign of the Times
Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul
Donny Hathaway - Everything Is Everything
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Make It Happen
Al Green - Call Me
Why the lack of music samples in the Rock episode? Did they forget to include them because there were plenty in the other two shows???
re: Trever Nelson and R&B. I know it's a thankless task categorising music but there was a bit of debate in the early to mid-nineties when that particular kind of dull, insipid papp by the likes of Luther Vandross, R Kelly and Mariah Kelly. was being categorised as "R&B" (by the likes of Nelson). It's stuck now.
All 3 programmes were a bit smug and "know-all-y" - each guest kept trying to outdo the other about who knew the most. It was also very much "our choices are real music and if you don't like it then you have no clue"

Very few people would classify Luther Vandross as R&B though, most would say that he is more of a Soul artist.

I didn't get that impression in any of the three programmes whatsoever. They acknowledged that their choices and opinions were personal to them.

It depends on your definition of R&B.
To some it's an umbrella term for several styles of black American music from the last 60-plus years, one of which would be Soul music.
My definition of R&B is far more narrow. For me it's the Rhythm 'n' Blues of the forties, fifties and early sixties, so I would not categorise Luther Vandross as "real" R&B, but nor would I categorise the genre known as R&B for the last 25 years as "real" R&B either.
The term R&B has become bastardised, so that many people now associate it with all that autotuned pap with those stupid robotic voice effects. That was a funny effect for about five minutes, but it's now inflicted a plague of talentless chancers on the airwaves.
I always thought R&B was more like Chairman Of The Board, but I don't think I own a single track that really fits the category.

No change from his dire Olympics waffle then.
