...and in the correct translation, in response to your question.

    Silence must fall.

    Erm, yeah.

While I'm here, though, I always found that a bit of an iffy prophesy.

I mean, when it comes to ambiguity, it's right up there Yoda's prophesy about Anakin Skywalker "Bringing balance to the Force".

Seems like a lot of people think of "Silence will fall" as some kind of victory for The Silence whereas, if I was a Silent, I think it'd make me rather nervous. :o

It's not so much a prophecy as a statement. At least the 'silence will fall' bit.

Silence must fall, because The Doctor cannot reveal his name.

Silence must fall when the question is asked, because if the Doctor reveals his name, it will unlock the time war.

At least that's my favourite theory that I've read.

I wonder, will the Silence appear in the finale? The thing that they've been trying to stop is going to happen, and I think these Whispermen, are trying to get the Question.

Will we see a Silence vs Whispermen battle?

Those creepy eyeless black-suited creatues in the finale trailer. They kind of look like funeral goers.

Oh I don't watch the trailers. I thought it was something I'd forgotten!

It did seem a bit strange to me that new (amd similar looking) characters were being introduced when The Silence were already well known and had been specified as being very interested in what might happen at Tenzalore!

Well, seeing as they're the ones who made it up, I think they're probably safe. It's not so much a prophecy as their mission statement. "Silence will fall" translates directly to "The Doctor must die". Of course, there's plenty of room for irony there, but that would be a bonus.

I must say, if this is true then I take back everything bad I've said about Series 7 so far. That is a fantastic theory.

Or The Gentlemen from the episode of Buffy called Hush ;)

    "Can't even shout.
    Can't even cry.
    The Gentlemen are coming by.
    Looking in windows,
    knocking on doors...
    They need to take eleven
    and they might take yours...
    Can't call to mom.
    Can't say a word.
    You're gonna die screaming
    but you won't be heard."

Now THEY were scary, although the Silents actually reminded me of the Gentlemen too.

Yup fantastic ep that was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding writing... amazing since there is no dialogue for 90% of it.... sorry off topic... but Josh Whedon should be showrunner for DW

Oh god no. We'd have the Doctor trying to rape one of his companions only for them to fall in love with him anyway.

The phrase 'Darkness fell over the land' is not bad for darkness, though. It means that darkness is everywhere and all-encompassing. I thought that's what was meant originally.

However now it's linked to a religious order and refers to the Doctor's silence, rather than the race the Silents, it's less clear and not as clever imo.

I have always assumed that the question being asked was a bad thing for the Silence. Isn't that why they wanted him dead? So he never got as far as Trenzelore. I guess I will find out in a few days.

The fall of the Roman Empire on the other hand - not so good for the Romans.

That's what makes it such a good prophecy. Barnum would have been proud.

Personally I think the Whisper men will be working for the new big bad
    The Great Intelligence
    - against the silence

Yes, it's supposedly a bad thing for everyone. At least that's what the religious order The Silence think, and they've taken silencing the Doctor as their self-appointed mission.

I still think there's more to the alien race that we call the Silents than that - why are they even involved? What's their backstory? Are they related to the Whispermen?
