After seeing Requiem For A Dream recently I realised that Ellen Burstyn's performance just had to be included in this thread, absolutely incredible.

    This scene in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3OK0KgXjmk

I haven't seen that film yet. I'm a big fan of his though so will watch it soon :)

Your in for a treat, actors basically use that performance as a measuring stick. The emotion displayed in the film was almost too much for Brando himself, he wanted to kill the director afterwards. Unfortunately that was his last great piece of work, around Godfather time. Those two performances couldn’t be more different, incredible stuff.

Another vote for Bjork in Dancer in the Dark. Her performance genuinely upset me quite remarkably, she's so believable and therefore heartbreaking that it's very tough to watch.

Ellen was superb..and she was robbed of the Best Actress Oscar, losing to Julia Roberts

This is a surprisingly tricky question.

After much deliberation I would like to give another vote to Ellen Burstyn, but for 'The Exorcist'

imo, her reaction to what was going on was one of the most frightening things about the movie.

    so many

    couple of restrained, mannered performances

albert finney, brilliant in "The Browning Version"

anthony hopkins in "Remains of The Day"

Will second that but you have to mention Emma Thompsons performance alongside.

The scene with her trying to get the book is possibly the most electrically charged scenes in cinema history IMO.

Just superb acting from both of them.

I know, absolutely ridiculous, how by any standards was Julia Roberts better? I bet most of the voters didn't even watch Requiem

Bjork for Dancer In The Dark is definitely the name that springs up the most which is actually quite surprising, should definitely check it out :)

Joseph Gordon Levitt in Mysterious Skin. Astonishing performance all the more so as he hardly says a word through most of his important scenes. I never felt like I was watching an actor, which made it all the more harrowing.

Also Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain is a close second.

Sean Penn in Dead Man Walking. That film changed how I felt about the death penalty.
